@technocrypto I may be out of the loop.. are there precedents for deregistration or reassignment of names?
@technocrypto @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp and what, everyone has an obligation to prevent the squatting of their own ENS names? and this isn't supposed to be coercive? imo ENS has a clear responsibility to deal with phishing/squatting/abuse/etc, and if it can't I see why it should always continue to be legitimate
@technocrypto @chrishobcroft @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp the moral norm of going to personal expense to stop squatters that are openly facilitated by the "system"?
if reform is too hard, and i grant that it might be, the correct approach is delegitimization and the creation of alternatives
@LefterisJP @technocrypto @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp no worries we can always use the opportunity to flesh things out š¤
maybe i'll take it when ENS punishes name squatting, and other abuses of the system.. not that I can give sufficient conditions ofc
@technocrypto @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp and where will I get the lifetime of gas from? tornado cash?
@technocrypto @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp obviously I don't want someone to use it for nefarious aims lol but I do promise I won't pay a cent to any such future squatter
anyone promoting ENS in its current incarnation is legitimizing name squatting.. ironic to act like not using it would be against my stance here
@technocrypto @chrishobcroft @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp trying anyway, why not change ENS so that it's not a problem?
@technocrypto @chrishobcroft @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp don't care about the registration, i wish this risk didn't exist and it doesn't have to because ENS is not immutable, and i won't be coerced into participating when protest is appropriate
@technocrypto @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp i didn't ask for you to squat it with the expectation that i would take it lol
doxing an eth address or more, is the meaning in this context
why should I end my boycott, so you can save gas?
@technocrypto @LefterisJP @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp name squatting is basically a crime, names are not property, doxing people isn't cool (especially in public though), and neither is trying to be magnanimous about it at the same time
@LefterisJP @technocrypto @josephpallant @ensdomains @rotkiapp he's squatting it just in case I change my mind about name squatting š
@dindjic or maybe some jail time

@maximusalphax my understanding is that Optimistic Rollups will still have advantages related to processing
i am not sure if zk-rollups will be able to address this gap or not
i also firmly believe that we'll see a world that goes diversely beyond EVM with L2s
a chat this morning w/ an optimistic rollup team yielded a good insight:
OR will be relevant even with ZK because in a rollup world, there'll be many use cases which never exit to L1 due to cost, and cross-L2 solutions will only improve
withdrawal delays are less of an issue
@epolynya @SamuelShadrach4 would love to see a way to do this, because without it, there is probably too much trust in these models imo
though i'm still supportive of them happening provided users are aware of tradeoffs and that we work to keep improving on-chain (Ethereum) hybrid data avail. options
@SamuelShadrach4 @epolynya users will be more willing to accept this because validiums will allow for things that are simply not possible / cheap enough without them
and i do hope many teams work to credibly decentralize this layer
& hybrids like volition/zk-porter give users fundamental choice
@SamuelShadrach4 @epolynya not as learned as you guys, but i think validiums will offer some interesting design space
teams can experiment with federated / decentralized ways to offer high-throughput data availability, while also focusing on maximizing native interoperability with Ethereum-based assets

@stan3web @saintsonso these are works which have already proven themselves as very likely to be historically important

@BitcoinMemeHub @JasonYanowitz you are confusing "artifact" value with "artistic" value
i understand you are triggered by the comparison to grandmaster,
but that does not mean that these assets can't have cultural value beyond what you might consider to be purely speculative
you don't have to like it though
early NFT art (including some of what is still being produced today) will not just be valuable because they are quality art, but because they are desirable cultural artifacts
many (sidelined) participants seem to overlook the importance of the latter when trying to assess value
@FabioAgave @PRguitarman fairly true i think
compared to dogs, they have spent far less time evolutionarily in the company of humans
š that said, (and somewhat separately) i do think there is room for truly trust-minimized app instances which are ungoverned
but these need to be met with continual evolution of the core and peripheral products to ensure that they remain relevant
tbh, there are many "web3" apps who don't get this and do not really reflect the potential of true web3
they operate more like web2, but mostly permissionless
they'll be disrupted in successive waves
the shift to rollups may be the catalyst which starts this trend https://t.co/PgNibHVUCY

i was totally focused on in-game items before then (especially back in 2018/2019), then on DeFi for most of 2020
i ignored the NFT art scene until late 2020, and didn't start buying until early 2021

@scytale400 @punk6529 this is exactly it
a lot of collectibles went through a "liquidity shock" moment once internet commerce went live. all of a sudden rare items were plentiful on markets, people could collect full sets easily, etc
but NFTs started this way, so we'll never have shocks like this
@XCOPYART i understood after i saw you sent the tanks https://t.co/5StRE1EmAe

@michaelxbloch it's not just about initial listings (and many big artists don't do drops on OpenSea),
it's about secondary market listings which can and do get fragmented
and they should be. in a web3 world, there is no reason why we all have to use one marketplace with a high fixed fee
@punk6529 or where collector A and collector B are located for that matter
global, instant liquidity
@shimmeringligh7 in theory, artists could deploy their own contracts and marketplaces if they wanted, and aggregators could serve their NFTs to others
they could either go low-fee or no-fee, because they already get paid the royalties anyway
not sure many will, but some might
@michaelxbloch the price differential for AirBnB vs Craigslist is actually a trust differential
you have certain guarantees with using one vs the other
for on-chain marketplaces, these differentials are either not meaningful or do not exist
@michaelxbloch because a lot of artists' work remains listed on multiple marketplaces
i.e., a large number of pieces on Nifty Gateway still trade there versus being listed on OS
most users don't need to all list on the same market or visit it
they just need to able to see prices across them
i think NFT marketplace aggregators will take off very quickly as soon as we have high quality ones
artists will become big fans because it'll dramatically enhance the discoverability of their work
listers will too because they will be able to list on lower fee marketplaces
@CozomoMedici @OnlyToasted @XCOPYART welcome to the blood bubble gang

@robdogeth When Ethereum switches to PoS there is no narrative war for it anymore - we can simply say that Ethereum doesn't use PoW/mining and that's that.
@thisisthecoin The entire Bitcoin community is fighting pretty hard for PoW.
The Ethereum community won't because we are moving to PoS and I think most of us believe that PoW is actually not great for a number of reasons.
@GShodl PoS requires 99.99% less electricity than PoW and as I said in my parent tweet, it doesn't matter at all if PoW is actually good for the environment, the narrative war is already lost.

RT @0xGreg_: Itās hard to express how exciting StarkNet is. I think lots of devs are starting to realise the opportunity. Easy L1 -> L2 mesā¦
@bierstadtcapit1 I never said it was a good criticism - just that it's a very pervasive narrative that I don't think the crypto ecosystem is going to be able to fight against.
@CryptoDuuudes That's my point though - it's not about truth or facts - it's about narratives.
And I just don't think the crypto ecosystem has any chance of winning a narrative war in the climate change domain.
@invidium0x It's much easier for us to fight back against the FUD by saying "well Ethereum doesn't use PoW" than it is to try and justify PoW as being good for the environment.
@invidium0x Well I guess my point is that I don't actually believe its winnable and I think the path of least resistance is just to get off PoW (which Ethereum is already planning to do of course).
@MJusticar Well, while those narratives are also bad, I don't think think that they are even in the same league as climate change.
The "NFTs are bad for the environment" narrative being so popular is a warning sign for PoW generally.
It doesn't matter if it's actually true that PoW is "good for the environment" - the crypto ecosystem is not going to win a narrative war when it comes to climate change.

The tendency is to bucket everything into either a sh*thole country or a Salvation Army country. Bomb them or patronize them, or bomb them and *then* patronize them.
The idea of foreigners as genuine peers, economic competitors, or true partners is surprisingly foreign.
Iām really interested in the idea of a personal dashboard.
You could take data from different pieces of my life and display it as a widget on an iOS home screen or a complication on an Apple Watch.
Is anyone doing this? https://t.co/PCn1IKoNtL
@balajis @palladiummag for all your governance futurism needs
Personal dashboard + community dashboard?
Well, that sounds exactly like what weāre building for your health at @joinvital š https://t.co/6OrQGa5BcN
They were smart. We were smart. They had Spassky, We had Fischer. They had Shostakovich, we had Van Cliburn. Vysotsky v Dylan. Landau v Feynman.

@balajis CARES act was another absurd subsidy to private insurance more so than the attempt to build state capacity
@balajis I actually agree. But the state itself is starved of resources outside of the military. That money goes first and foremost to prop up asset prices and the traditional finance sector. There isnāt some profligate public spending spree on the state itself. That has been hollowed out
@balajis @ImZachStar is incredible and sits on that level with content IMO

Crypto is just another asset class = the internet is just another TV channel.
Itās more than an asset class because it transforms the custody, trading, issuance, governance, and programmability...
@balajis "We didn't go & say, "Oh Blackberry, do better." "Blockbuster, do better..." We just replaced them...with better technological versions. So the idea that, "Oh, New York Times, do better" - That's a completely outmoded way of thinking about it." ~ @balajis

On a personal level: what do you *need* to know about and track over time?
- Your health, blood glucose, physical fitness
- Your income, burn rate, personal runway
- Your progress towards long-term goals
Not random infotainment. That's recreation.
So: dashboards > newspapers.
@balajis Been doing this for a decade. Now run it all on AirTable. For myself, my family, my business, community and others. https://t.co/17UaffR226

@balajis That's the day at your regular tech startup. I don't know who said it (@paulg?) but a sign for a successful startups is investing early on in a big screen just to display KPIs.
Quantifying things can be very helpful. You might think you're poles apart, that it's 0 and 1. But maybe you'd be fine with 0.47 and they're ok with 0.55.
@basche42 This post compares New Deal to ARRA, finding them comparable.
But where are the tangible results? For a few billion of private money we got (profitable) SpaceX. For $787B of public funds...we got what? And why do we think the CARES act will be better?
https://t.co/Nmyej3txUt
@basche42 There actually was a WPA/TVA-scale spending spree with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the stimulus of 2009. But there was no Hoover Dam.
Why? Because, across partisan lines, the US can't execute in the physical world anymore.
https://t.co/SWtoV6nXVz
@basche42 I think we're seeing the same thing from different directions. Basically, the people in the US state are either unable or unwilling to actually serve the greater good. Incentives aren't aligned, metrics aren't there, leaders aren't there. But I don't think this is lack of $.
@basche42 We agree that the state prints trillions of dollars.
They might be ethics-limited, in that they are intentionally bidding up their own assets.
Or they could be intelligence-limited, in that they don't realize the effects.
But they aren't resource-limited in dollar terms.
@basche42 How is it starved of resources? It prints literally trillions of dollars. It is the least resource-limited organization on the planet, perhaps in human history.
Competent governments do exist.
And there are pockets of competence within the US government, as within any government, particularly at the local and state levels.
But you don't have to be a libertarian ā I don't call myself one ā to observe the decline of US state capacity.
And after PG&E failed to provide power, the CDC failed to control disease, the foreign policy establishment failed in Afghanistan, and the Federal Reserve failed to control inflationā¦does it make sense to ask anything of the American state?
We can rely on that state to fail.
No. Employers also want this because it allows them to protect their company from the demands of social media mobs. They announce that their hands are tied by policy.
Proof: I fund many employers. https://t.co/FTWFId3pMT
The nepotists of New York vs the founders of the world? I know who I have my bets on.

Then it becomes mediocre
It's too risk-averse
Then it fails
Now no one wants to join it

https://t.co/0F8cWhOKab
@MickeyParx @thxbutknow Similarly with India this decade. Or startup cities, or crypto, or anything. You have to actually go and seek it out to see it.
Btw, city managers are more like CEOs. Unlike mayors they are not elected. They run the city on a day-to-day basis. https://t.co/UzQQmzQhGo
Just like a startup, you can pull many different kinds of analytics into a city dashboard. https://t.co/QKzVogDjz8 https://t.co/C9bYD3Mxii

The OpenGov City Manager's Dashboard.
This could be extended to startup cities, and to online communities with large budgets like DAOs.
https://t.co/QKzVogDjz8 https://t.co/UujfTfMGpN

What OpenGov is doing is also relevant here. Perhaps integrate citizen data, on an opt-in, aggregated, and anonymized basis, into the city dashboard via a city app.

Our current metrics for society are bad because they are easily gamed and aren't granular enough.
Society doesn't necessarily prosper as a whole if the stock market goes up. But it would if the (inflation-adjusted) net worth histogram was right-shifted.
https://t.co/QtVW72IElH
How to execute on this?
1) Fintech apps already have much of this data
2) States like Estonia & Singapore have national ID systems via e-identity & Singpass that can serve as primary key
3) Histograms can be calculated in privacy-preserving way, eg: https://t.co/TASs0XFR1A https://t.co/A2OTa9nmLG

Imagine if local governments began looking at the histogram of net worth of their population every day, calculated in an opt-in/privacy-protecting way.
Not just the median, the whole distribution.
Not just the income, the savings minus debt.
Then acted every day to boost that. https://t.co/dRXhmRN8pw
@rmnth @SamHarrisOrg That is, web2 VCs will exit via M&A or public listing.
Ballpark estimate is that M&A is at least 50%, maybe more of exits. But they are also fast exits, even if they are smaller amounts than public listings.
You can determine exact % from crunchbase or cb insights.
@rmnth @SamHarrisOrg Also, "VC willingness to fund startups" should be replaced by "VC returns". It's not an abstract willingness, it's their direct financial performance. No M&As means at least 50% of their exits go away, maybe more.

Doesn't necessarily mean reading *zero* news, zero infotainment, zero serendipity. Just treat it like watching a movie, as part of your entertainment budget.
Take the sugar out of your coffee, take the newspaper (or news feed) out of your morning. Replace it with a personal dashboard, then a community dashboard.
If we think about it from the "jobs to be done" perspective, newspapers have this incredible pride-of-place ā first thing you look at in the morning! ā but typically do not add enough value to deserve that position.
Personal dashboards could, though...
https://t.co/vVwxPF3lyR
dashboards > newspapers
This feels like a good vector of attack to definitionally disrupt newspapers.
First thing you look at each day shouldn't be random stories someone else picked. Should be carefully selected metrics you want to improve.
See also:
https://t.co/3v6Ti6FBPk
Now extend this to communities.
The metrics you consider personally important should also be considered important by the community you want to join, and on their dashboard.
Maybe you want to learn a language or minimize sugar. With a little thought, you can dashboard it.
RT @lndian_Bronson: Here's an example, from Bartholomew Co., IN:
https://t.co/CvJWvsYB4f https://t.co/zxhJ9ZHfnV
The point of tracking metrics over time, and centering the morning on them, is that it gives long-term memory and focus.
The day doesn't start with random stories from a newspaper. The day starts with visualizing shared long-term goals, and tracking actions against those goals.
Any company beyond a certain scale has a set of dashboards that the CEO and all execs review each day. Examples below.
What if you did that for a community, like a DAO?

@balajis The startup-city mentality is one which drives innovation and results in less regulation and more business and entrepreneurship. If localities daw themselves as the institutional anchors of a successful future, they would be far more in tune with future proofing their governance.
An example of a new kind of corporate media - when a venture firm decides to go direct.
Because it understands, as @balajis puts it:
"Every company is a media company."
"Own a media company or be owned by one."
