I'll add this: Adam was my first and most important source. Without him, I wouldn't have been able to break the Theranos story. Hats off to his courage and integrity. He's one of the real heroes of this story.
So, I've been fielding queries from reporters asking me to confirm that former Theranos lab director Adam Rosendorff, who is currently testifying at Elizabeth Holmes's trial, was my source. I can now confirm it. Alan Beam = Adam Rosendorff.

This cycle isn't ideal. A pharma company issues a press release claiming a vaccine/booster is safe and effective in [age group]. That makes headlines. Media tell public that approval will happen in [# of weeks]. It's expected and accepted as truth before FDA even sees the data.

This is why I struggle with folks saying "consumer mediated" is the answer. Yes, consumers should get to access their own medical information when they want to. But it should be seamless & available with a click of a button.
Imagine if I wanted to get a sense of your household budget... Instead of logging into your bank account and seeing the data from everywhere you spent $ in one place, you had to call up every restaurant, every shop etc. and ask. That's what health care is making us do.

You can argue that vax mandates are an unacceptable violation of personal freedom. But it's very hard to argue that vax mandates don't actually work in closing the vaccination gap, often by about 15 points (in line with "will get vaccinated if mandated" polling"). https://t.co/8QkZ896Jy4

"For People Who Got The J&J Vaccine, Some Doctors Are Advising Boosters ASAP" - I & others- I really do advise booster now for J&J given CDC MMWR data showing less protection against hospitalization with delta for J&J 71% (Moderna 93%; Pfizer 88%) https://t.co/XaEILW8t6d
I & others quoted:97-98% vax not needed to get back to 'normal'. True that delta needs higher levels of immunity to achieve control (child vax coming); CDC can use hospitalization rates (other countries used 5-10/100K) to decide when to lift masks (flu 20-40/100K typical season) https://t.co/V2CAoFX4vT

Lot of people want to give Biden the benefit of the doubt because he isn't Trump. No thanks. This is why I was reluctant to vote for Biden. Personally he seemed more moral; publicly, he seemed to have as much disrespect for the American voter as anyone.

Twisting and turning to try and blame for Afghanistan anyone other than JOE BIDEN is just a lie. The left wanted to leave...so did Trump. Was Trump wrong? If so, then so is the Left. Trump ended up NOT LEAVING because of the military advice...Biden didn't.
@MelissaTweets Oh, that is their duty. But the other people are cowards.
You'd have to be a complete ignoramus to have this take. Trump did want to leave (which, Biden agreed with). But he didn't because the military warned him away. Biden, on the other hand, overruled the military... THAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE CATASTROPHE. https://t.co/UrWwqOkaL0
@MelissaTweets So, the military basically got all the predictions right, were overruled...and the same clowns that got it wrong are missing, while the generals are getting raked over the coals in Congress. Sounds about right.

8. But any way you slice it, there's been a lot of testing for #flu during the pandemic & not much flu found. It appears to be inching (millimetering?) upwards, but it is still well below what it would normally be at this time of year. -30- https://t.co/kYufa4QDLC
7. Another caveat: Pre-Covid, most #flu tests were likely ordered when someone had #flu-like symptoms. In the pandemic, I would imagine a lot of these are tests that look for Covid or flu or other respiratory pathogens. I don't know what that does to the comparability of data.
6. We're still not back to April 2020 #flu levels, but the percentage of positive tests is slowly rising. A caveat I don't know how to adjust for: The denominator varies per 2-wk period. Mostly >100K, sometimes >200K tests, a few times <100K. https://t.co/yuGqG3YOp5
5. I wanted to see how 0.68% test positivity compared to the rest of the pandemic. The main graph is Aug 2019 (to the left is the 2019-2020 flu season; very active) through Sept 2021. Flu vanished in April 2020. The inset is then on. We're still not back to April 2020 flu levels. https://t.co/GLxXzXkUUR
4. Aside: Another Q about #flu is whether a family of flu B viruses, B/Yamagata, was driven extinct during the pandemic. Two B/Yam viruses were reported in this @WHO report but as @trvrb would say, let's see if sequences get logged into the databases. TBD. https://t.co/t9eiuV9MVu https://t.co/pMhOragFeS
3. How much #flu is out there? Of nearly 276K flu tests run in 88 countries from 8/30-9/12, 1,884 were positive for flu — 0.68%. During the same 2-week period in 2019 (ie before Covid) 7.4% of tests globally were positive for influenza. In 2020, it was 0.04%, ie almost none. https://t.co/C4JKtkKHHK

@Just_Curius 2. If boosting is only required sporadically, I'm not sure all the manufacturers on your list will get licensed in the U.S.
@Just_Curius 1. Dunno. A lot will depend on whether we're going to need to be boosted occasionally or regularly. If the latter, there may be room for next-gen vaccines that combine Covid & flu. If someone comes up with a good nasal vaccine, that should find a market. Otherwise ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's more evidence to suggest that "breakthrough" SARS-CoV-2 infections among vaccinated people are not as "rare" as claimed- & that's with the patchy data largely based on symptomatic testing. Even the CDC has switched from saying "rare" to "a small percentage of cases."
I continue to mask up, socially distance, avoid indoor spaces, and avoid air travel, because I am interdependent with people who are susceptible. That,& it's supremely reasonable for me to do what I can do to avoid infection, even as a vaccinated person.

Immensely frustrating that the same people who rejected the possibility of a Delta surge, thereby discouraging prevention, would now again want to remove the measures that are actually addressing the problems they helped cause.
Masks have now helped limit the Delta surge (the one MG predicted won't happen). But most places are not at herd immunity as we enter colder weather, and VE is waning in those who can't get boosted (due to opposition from people like MG). So it would be dumb to unmask now.
You know what will really make people think vaccines don't work? When they are vaccinated and get COVID19 because they were entering indoor public spaces maskless. https://t.co/o440M3tMXC

there's been a lot of talk about backlash against experts/scientists due to the pandemic, AFAIK there's literally no evidence for this in general public trust numbers.likely because average joe got even more things wrong about pandemic and then saw vaccines created in record time
once you zoom out of the US, where issue is partisanship in both vaccines and trust in science,my (unpopular?) opinion is that you can't really draw these sort of inferences due to range restriction giving low correlatiosn (everyone trusts scientists a lot no matter what they do)

Every 5 days there’s a tweet that’s like, “Men, are you uncomfy if your partner makes more money than you?” so I’ll just say it: I will only date men who make less money than me. I’m trying to treat my man like the pretty little prince he is. He will be my beloved sugar baby. 🥰
@D_PaulAngel He identifies as a “medical conservative” and consistently pushes anti-mask and anti-vaxx propaganda. Plus, he’s blocked nearly all of medtwitter for calling him out! (Myself included lol)
@drjohnm @jeremyfaust @meganranney Do you think you played any role in lowering trust? I sure do. For example, you said the vaccine trials for adolescents didn’t measure clinical outcomes. In fact, the trials measured whether kids got Covid or not. The vaccine worked. You didn’t mention this.
@johnlimouze Now you just gotta tranche it into low risk art (dril posts, krat’s bug book) and high risk art (my uncle’s tiktoks) and then make it the backbone of everyone’s 401k.
@ENirenberg @Boghuma @notdred @Yadav_supplychn Or perhaps this level of detail on contract negotiations calls more for investigative reporting by someone like @KatherineEban
@ENirenberg @Boghuma @notdred I’ll keep an eye out! Also (very) possible I’ve been giving this administration too much credit for negotiating straightforward solutions to publicly identified problems, e.g. minimum shipment size, when overhauling gov’t distribution. Ideally @Yadav_supplychn would weigh in…
@ENirenberg @Boghuma @notdred I respect both of them immensely, but think that may be extrapolating from the state of contracts, cold chains & legal frameworks several months ago (all of which have evolved). Personally, I’d kill to know whether donation & domestic booster contracts cross-reference each other.
A few months ago, a family friend asked my dad to pick her up from the airport b/c her husband was in the hospital, allegedly due to back issues. Turned out she was lying and the husband was actually in the ICU with covid. In case you were wondering why I don't trust Trumpets.
@TylerDinucci @nycsouthpaw People like him make a lot more sense if you recognize them as a one-person brand executing a pivot to a more lucrative target market, as opposed to someone acting on some kind of moral principle or intellectual coherence.
Wear N95+ Avoid shared air Clean / filter the air indoors Get vaccinated (or #gigavaxxed when possible) for a better chance of survival Avoid infection with SARS2: Vaccinated or not Big or small Goal should be elimination Thanks
Good morning to everyone except the ones that deny airborne protection is needed for everyone in the society to prevent an infection with a nasty “airborne” pathogen in the middle of a pandemic.
@realQrampage I need more rcts if readings following vinay helps improve survival rates during the pandemic or just teaches me anything other than the symptoms of rci (rectocranial inversion)

@fumbler00ski @DemFromCT @JamesSurowiecki 3. They are less educated. I have literally had someone tell me that he was not getting the vaccine because he is diabetic and thought it too risky. (He eventually got it and gleefully told me).
@fumbler00ski @DemFromCT @JamesSurowiecki From talking to individuals in this group: it is multifactorial, like so many things: 1. They have legitimate hesitancy. They are not anti-vaxxers but come from communities that are highly skeptical of government, institutions, etc. 2. They fear losing days of work.
@thehowie @JamesSurowiecki Also, health care facilities reflect the community where they live. An unvaxxed community will feed unvaxxed workers to the institutions
Thank you to @j_g_allen for trying to set this straight. We've seen so much dynamic change in testing--access, uptake, that we cannot use test positivity as a direct measure of incidence. I keep debating if I should talk about the terrible depression I'm feeling. I think that's a sign that I should talk about it. Social media is too often just people pretending that everything is great.

Here's the fundamental obstacle to expanded public dental coverage: It would cost more for the state to take this on. And it would reduce dentists' incomes because the state would have greater pricing power over reimbursement. The only people who would benefit are...the patients.

@thehowie @laurenboebert It’s pathetic.

Hands down, a must-read from @edyong209 👇🏻 (Dr. @alexandraphelan has my fav quote) https://t.co/bxtBKGRDwn
An important use of a rapid test in addition to public health tools. For Public Health, rapid "Test-to-Stay" is an important use. For medical purposes, Rapid "Test-to-Treat" can help identify COVID early and get immediate treatment or reduce barriers to heading to hospital. https://t.co/SCaGY1olwy
Good example of how even a very good test loses most of its effectiveness to stop spread if not fast If @KPN1 was infectious when the swab was collected on Sun morning, by time her result is returned, the “effective sensitivity” to identify and stop spread is likely <20%. https://t.co/y5EdABIrfF
We need to think about preparedness differently, in terms of not just vaccines & tech solutions, but also social measures like paid sick leave, universal healthcare, and more. Social equity is not a side-quest of preparedness but its foundation. 6/ https://t.co/6D2ENWBrRx
@rkhamsi Webmd thinks it’s one word. Sounds right…
@DrTomori @prof_goldberg Having to do the reading in real-time has been… an experience. But also very fulfilling. These last 2 years really have been like taking a Masters of Public Health course (with an extremely punishing essay requirement) from the University of Oh No Everything Is On Fire.
Those lessons are codified in this new piece. One of the people I interviewed described this as “the most important piece about the pandemic that had not yet been written.” I hope I did it justice. I hope we can break the cycle. Fin/ https://t.co/6D2ENWBrRx
You can sort of see this piece as the third in a trilogy. I wrote the first in 2018, when I asked if the US was ready for the next pandemic, and tried to work out what "preparedness" even means. 8/ https://t.co/warEfLblRK
Some of that is happening. Biden’s American Rescue Plan is an incredibly important pandemic-preparedness bill that doesn't look like one. But more needs to happen, and neglect is already setting in. The pull of normal is strong but normal led to this. 7/ https://t.co/6D2ENWBrRx
I look at *why* the panic-neglect cycle exists, including 150 years that led to America’s crumbling public health system & its obsession with biomedical panaceas. That history is vital. It’s why we think about this pandemic the way we do. 5/ https://t.co/6D2ENWBrRx
I’m really interested in the idea of a personal dashboard. You could take data from different pieces of my life and display it as a widget on an iOS home screen or a complication on an Apple Watch. Is anyone doing this? https://t.co/PCn1IKoNtL

It's really a deep problem that even someone as experiences in working with data has issues verifying which of these two tweets is correct. The data aren't consistently presented and it's a bit hard to know whether and when you're comparing apples to apples or to rockfish. https://t.co/G5cv4XuD2S

I graduated high school in 1990, and I know I’m old. But, when I was in high school, 6% of 15-19 year old women got pregnant. Now, it is 1.5%. Interesting, this isn’t talked about more amidst all the talk of family decline. Seems like a unequivocally positive development.
