This is an honour for me and for all of us at @themojostory and I look forward to it enormously. Thank you . https://t.co/GEBfmZI3H9
I've seen enough: the vote to recall CA Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) fails.
Amazing to listen to Senate Republicans' attack Afghanistan withdrawal--whose conditions they supported under Trump.
Note that the 5000 Taliban prisoners that the Trump admin agreed to get released were all released by summer of 2020...
As many of us suspected at the time, Gen. Milley was performing the role of General Haig and SecDef Schlesinger as Nixon unraveled in 1974. Of course, even a drunk Nixon was far saner than a sober Trump. #Peril
@samstein This is the cult hero of the MAGA mob. A 5 yr. old
party that loses a recall should have to reimburse the state
@RadioFreeTom @BillyNoTakes https://t.co/hgYllM66tW https://t.co/SSsk1Aqybi

@MikeMadden @gtconway3d these people NEVER came forward, never got in a room to urge 25th A and still refuse to confront his enablers like McCarthy.
@kellylovescake @gtconway3d @BillyNoTakes We are citizens of the United States and have every right to be discussing this because in the end we, the voters, are going to be the arbiters of a lot of this behavior in the future expressed through whom we choose as leaders.
Trump Calls Allies to Demand Gen. Mark Milley Be ‘Arrested’ for ‘Treason’ https://t.co/2Dvx2VpAAe via @thedailybeast
@RobMcCreadyCO @gtconway3d No. The system is designed NOT to do that.
@gtconway3d @BillyNoTakes Former STRATCOM chief tried to answer that when asked in Congressional hearings. I was not heartened.
@gtconway3d @TheMosasaurus "Sir, transmit again, my cell signal is weak"
@THeels77 @BillyNoTakes @gtconway3d That's not how it works.
@gtconway3d Of course. I'm just saying that there's a whole bunch of dangerous orders that can be given before you get to "this one is a capital offense."
@TheMosasaurus @gtconway3d Imagine a battalion commander who says to some 1LT: "Get over here and bring materials XYZ from the battalion office with you. And don't stop to tell your captain or the major. On the double."
Is that legal? Sure it is.
@gtconway3d Yes, but if that included "belay that order unless you check with me," that's a problem. Even if it's the right thing to do.
“Our political attachments often matter much more to us than our political ideas—which is why, when forced to choose, so many Republicans and conservatives discarded their former ideas in order to preserve their former attachments.” @davidfrum https://t.co/2fSNiR6z1h

Welp, it only took 2 1/2 weeks for 14 to get sick with a cold. Fully vaccinated, so probably just a regular old yucky cold.

In one respect, he’s right — the Founding Fathers would’ve had no idea what the Equal Protection Clause was; it wasn’t ratified until 1868, and wasn’t applied to the federal government until 1954.

@jonfavs We are currently projecting that election day votes will give Jenner a narrow push into 12th. Though the decision desk is reviewing a call on whether @johnrobertdrake will defeat my old pal - former GOP congressman @DougOse for 15th. #twinkmentum
A big and underappreciated revelation in the new Woodward and Costa book: Pence said he tried *everything he possibly could* to help Trump subvert the election.
Pence is no hero.

I was in the wings of this WWII Foundation event, so forgive the photo, but someone please tell Lawrence Brooks, the oldest living WWII veteran — who turned 112 Sunday — that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff wished him a very happy birthday at this event this evening. https://t.co/hn7Fgfcscs

I love our youngest child but do not like waking up to discover all the dental floss in the house being unwound, tied to door knobs, and stretched across in spider webs through multiple rooms (this happens so frequently our kids have a name for it, “flossing the house.”).
Right-wingers have already suggested that Milley was guilty of plotting a coup, engaged in treason and should be fired, court-martialed or even executed.
If only they showed half as much outrage about the conduct which twice got Trump impeached. https://t.co/vEAjGdIiUB
@AshleyRParker because they wanted plausible deniability
. @mccaffreyr3: "At that time, Trump had fired all the top civilian officials in the Pentagon, and we had a minor functionary retired lieutenant colonel sycophant of Trump as a Sec. of Defense. We were at a perilous moment, I thought this was the opening moves to a coup." https://t.co/JjE1C2tnjA

If Trump was so "crazy" and "unstable" that Milley took steps to keep Trump from attacking China or launching nukes...shouldn't that have been immediately dealt with and disclosed to the public?
If this story is true, I can't help but feel that our political system is failing us. https://t.co/2JEZprvyqf
Gavin Newsom saves dozens of lives by preventing Caitlyn Jenner victory road rally
Big-money supporters begin seeking excuses to avoid four-hour French Laundry celebratory dinners with Gavin Newsom, the man who drove Kimberly Guilfoyle to decide “I’ve got to be with someone less fucking annoying, like Donald Trump Jr.”
Oh. Milley had to calm China's top general, who was preparing in case Trump launched a missile. And Haspel worried Trump was about to start a war with Iran.
Super fun that so many in the GOP still ache for Trump's attention, given how many of them know he's totally unstable. https://t.co/3Xhd8et3et
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was so concerned about Trump’s mental state in the final weeks of his presidency that he convened a meeting of commanders to remind them of procedures for launching a nuclear weapon, new Woodward and Costa book says.

Lots of commentators talking about how our withdrawal from Afghanistan was "embarrassing." You know what's embarrassing, having the chairman of the joint chiefs call his Chinese equivalent to say we're not unstable & we won't launch a first strike. https://t.co/PAzeGR9pU6
Milley moved to prevent Trump from launching military strikes against China, per Woodward/Costa's book. Milley "believed the president had suffered a mental decline after the election." But Trump hadn't changed. He has always been an unhinged flamethrower. https://t.co/QKiBYos99j

In a normal country full of serious and adult human beings, this would be the only story of the day today and would prompt a hell of a lot of worry from both political parties and every remotely informed or engaged American citizen. https://t.co/KTcpmaICC5
The Constitution was not designed to cope, concurrently, with an insane President and a political party that could block action against that president merely because it represents enough people who don't give a shit that the president is insane.
No one can countermand it. But the commander of STRATCOM could say "this is an illegal order and I am not bound to follow it." POTUS can then start relieving people until he gets to someone who will follow the order. https://t.co/T5Ho7Nzi3E

ELDER CONCEDES
"Let's be gracious in defeat," Elder says. "We may have lost the battle, but we are going to win the war."
Benny is out here riffing on a Mastercard ad campaign from 24 years ago. Could you do better than that? Sure you could. But why bother?
Elder thanking staff by name, thanking surrogates like Betty Chu and Gloria Romero. "She's a Democrat - hopefully a recovering Democrat, we will see."

I felt some east coast snobbery in this storyline — a glib sense that Californians loved celebrities so Jenner could be a factor. She had no idea what she was doing and voters notice things like that. https://t.co/IMV5IZRO5r

Lazy and corrupt corporate "journalists" should take notes here and learn what real reporting is: sweating through your blazer while haranguing undergrads through a loudspeaker on a Connecticut street corner
https://t.co/MFtTrj4JjM
Say what you want about Elder but he’d been talking about policy and ideas on his shows since the early 90s. Jenner couldn’t even remember how she voted.
To be fair, Dems were scrambling for some way to scare their base, so they spent a little time talking about her. But she quickly revealed herself as a lightweight and it was clear that Republican voters weren’t interested in voting for her.
@blakehounshell After the Garland experience it's very much about 2022 - McConnell has come up with reasons not to allow a vote on a nominee before, why not again?
Using the term "political prisoners" in this context is ridiculous. People were swept up in a dragnet over an actual crime. Are some of them innocent? They may be. Are some being over-prosecuted? Likely. But that's why we have trials; it's why we have due process of law. https://t.co/LGlXBfvO92

Janey walked it back quickly but between her tanking, Kucinich losing after not saying if he’d been vaccinated, and Newsom turning vaccine mandates into a Dem base motivator, I see a pattern.
Fox call onscreen, party getting slightly quieter https://t.co/XKfqUOJFeY

As in-person voting gets underway in California, Donald Trump releases yet another statement saying the race is "totally rigged" and Newsom will "probably win."
GOTV, baby
Schwarzenegger had never *held* office but he was cultivating an image as a civic-minded moderate who understood how California worked.
Schwarzenegger had spent years building political cred before the recall. 11 months before he won the gov race, he was the face of a successful education funding ballot measure. https://t.co/YPEs9Uf44X https://t.co/q9UgxFHZDt
Polls show Elder around 35% on the second part of the ballot, but most Dems are leaving that blank. So, imagine that "no" gets 55% of 12 million votes, but Elder gets 56% of 8 million votes. It will be a popular myth that Elder ran ahead of Newsom. https://t.co/FupKbql0TO
An hour til polls close; time for some music from Recall Country https://t.co/EQbUtbaavV
There are always some "can this candidate take out this R in a +30 Trump district" articles, which are dumb. But imagine if MSNBC ran segment after segment in late October 2020 insisting Amy McGrath was going to win.
Larry Elder’s website promoting voter fraud before results (or votes) are even in is hilarious for its preemptive concession but it’s also very dangerous. It talks ominously about how the “ammo box” might be needed. These guys are openly calling for terrorism. #CaliforniaRecall

Dear California, will you please reform your ridiculous recall system! I favor abolition since a 4-year term is short enough, but at least double/triple number of signatures to qualify, and limit number of question 2 candidates via high number of signatures etc. #CARecall
The exchange between Romney and Blinken was one of the best examples of effective oversight I can remember. Hard, non-gotcha questions that produced substantive answers. If only there were more of this.
DOJ doubles down with a motion in district court asking judge to enjoin Texas abortion law. We knew it was coming but gratifying to read it and have it clearly lay out Texas’s brazen lawlessness.
@kasie Disagree.
It is about the oddities of Calif recall law. They are *too* easy to launch.
By same standards, most governors across the country could also face recall.
Then it’s a matter of motivating special-election turnout. Which Dems seem to have done.
Newsom is gonna come out of this stronger than he started, huh? Now he can say he has a MANDATE for the MANDATES.
The key is pp. 22–32, where DOJ does an exceptional job of explaining why the United States is *uniquely* situated to bring this suit, not because it can generally enforce constitutional rights, but largely b/c of Texas's efforts to preclude *other* traditional avenues of review.
So California rejected Larry Elder. Weird that a large, racially diverse state doesn’t want to be led by a guy who thinks George Zimmerman is a hero, Stephen Miller should be president, slaveowners deserved reparations, COVID should proliferate and the minimum wage should be $0. https://t.co/xeMFduNAtq

Thanks for asking me. Before we get to "how to cover," we need decisions from the big newsrooms. Are they willing to decide who's a bad actor, or is that something to be left to others? Does responsible news coverage penalize bad actors, or does it merely describe their actions? https://t.co/3ZLJtJ2UBR
My real takewaway from this recall, however, is this is another painful exercise in minority rule and how a small tangent of people can leverage power in an attempt to overthrow duly elected officials by any available means. This whole thing was a bit silly, no?

Recalls in California are common because the constitution of the state sets a ridiculously low bar for having a recall. Any group can start a recall even with little popular support. Attributing having a real to a lack of wide support fully misunderstands California.

There’s one thing I want to add to the black editor discussion. (Well, many things but we’ll settle for one rn.) It’s not enough to have a black editor in a decision-making position for representation’s sake. They actually have to be empowered to make decisions of consequence.
@yumcoconutmilk The problem with AOC is that she’s a national figure who is actually supposed to be beholden to a local community. Her community is fighting for federal funds to recover from a hurricane RN - right across the bridge - and she’s at a wealthy tax write off talking about her dress.
I’ll never forget when some AOC stan was like “I love you, AOC! Fuck the feds!” and she was like “technically, I am the feds.” I think remembering that fact would help people calm down LOL
It looks like there were a lot of people wearing political messages last night. Several white women in fact. But I have yet to hear the outrage about them using their platform to communicate something.

Building multiracial coalition is very, very difficult because non-Black people inevitably refuse to follow the lead of impacted Black folks. And there’s very little acknowledgment or examination of it.
I just had to vent that right quick.

Alright. Back to it.
I only have energy for Black people building autonomous organization that is tied to specific land & communities & that has the level of coordination needed to name an agenda, mobilize ppl, operate campaigns & improve material conditions for those communities.
The rest is noise.
Fascinating how the media isn’t covering the gutting of all ethics provisions in HR1 that the House passed by Senate Dems after the 4 years we just endured. This is a master class in public relations by the anti-ethics caucus in the Senate and a useful study of media pliability.
The theme of next year’s Met Gala should be “A Meditation on Misplaced Anger”
All of that being said, the @NewYorker’s website has, over the past 5 years, published a comparably impressive array of diverse bylines, easily eclipsing the print mag in terms of representation and inclusivity.
@KarenAttiah Same. And i’m trying to swear off the stuff for waistline reasons.
Norm MacDonald was a true GOAT. As a comic, as a talk show guest. A true original. He tweeted this to me as my dad was dying from cancer in 2014, “I’m just an idiot, Laurie but I found when I embraced the pain as tightly as I could it became love. I pray for you.” RIP Norm. 🇨🇦

The Met Gala started as a charitable endeavor. It evolved into something ostentatious and over the top, which it has been for many years. A major event for celebrities and NYC elites? Absolutely. But it is not a stellar example of giving back.
With everybody showing interest in congressional ethics today, now seems like a good time for this reminder: MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRADE STOCKS.
As a culture bearer, I call on the Meraux Foundation, owners of The Eagle Saloon, were the pioneers of jazz (Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory, Buddy Bolden) cultivated America’s music a century ago, to restore this sacred place with our sacred music of jazz. It sits empty, neglected. https://t.co/4SD2UYrwdz

Callé Hamel, Havana, Cuba. Every Sunday they gather &continue a long tradition of dance and music in honor of the Orishas. In New Orleans in Congo Square, captured Africans did the same, holding on to their spiritual life. Jazz was created out of these gatherings. Bring them Back https://t.co/TVVzcgl3Kw

@KarenAttiah The reason we have to change slang all the time is because some folks get a hold of it and ruin it.
Just thinking about how in 1973 Marlon Brando rejected his Oscar in solidarity with indigenous folks and their treatment in the industry. I don't think we will see that sort of radical celeb activism again. Instead it's messages on dresses and glossy political commentary.
@KarenAttiah @hoka @tressiemcphd the Hoka crew keeps growing. When the world opens up, they're going to have a booth at all of our gatherings.
I’m truly confused about why anyone is upset that a Congresswoman representing a district in NEW YORK CITY would attend the Met Gala. The Mayor & his family were there, too, looking like objects from a broken toy shop, & you know what? They were supposed to be there.

@KarenAttiah Yay! Finally something I can help with
* SHOES get good ones (like Hoka)
* WARM UP longer than you think you need to -- e.g. two miles at 50% before any speed work
* STRETCH afterward, holding each muscle for 1 minute
* EAT some protein within an hour
* ICE bath your joints
1/3
@KarenAttiah I miss it so much. I hated the first 15 minutes or so, until my body hit the groove and my breathing became deep and regular. Run with a friend? Or a group of friends? Or different friends on different days? Not on concrete, if you can avoid it. Carry a koan or poem in your head.
@KarenAttiah One is done for spectacle and one is done for messaging.
@KarenAttiah Conventionally, I suspect if you agree with it, it's a statement, but if you disagree, it's a stunt. ;)
@KarenAttiah Give your brain something to do, so it doesn’t obsess about discomfort. I’m not good with sitting meditation: I fidget. But running became like a moving meditation. Giving my body something to do allowed my mind to calm down and flow.
@KarenAttiah * COMPRESS afterward to control edema, reduce swelling
* WATER throughout the day
* CROSS TRAIN weights for strength and recovery (FWIW I disagree w/running every day)
* TURNOVER is what I prefer to focus on rather than long strides, which puts extra strain on the lower leg
2/3
@KarenAttiah You do NOT need to run every day! Pick a route that you enjoy and easy to do from home. Use the run time to clear your head out and think through problems. Pick a short distance to start and ramp up slowly.
And you'll still hate it, just not as much. https://t.co/AqpCCSWR1j

@KarenAttiah Fixed it for you: https://t.co/Ip5CkzeUF5

@KarenAttiah @Bill_Palmer Punch your coach, then start running. Win/win.
@KarenAttiah @hoka Do you feel like you are up too high from the ground? Or maybe that’s their walking styles….. I stan anything that will help my over pronation and alignment issues! #pigeontoes
@KarenAttiah Get a different coach.
Maybe bicycling or swimming is better for you.
@KarenAttiah I fear we have reached that point in capitalism where there is no one who cannot be bought and the buyers now have so much money that they resemble demi gods in that creepy way that science fiction used to warn us superpowers would create. It is exhausting and disturbing.
@KarenAttiah Relax, think about how good you'll feel for the rest of the day. You shouldn't run every day, but every other.
@KarenAttiah @hoka 😍 I’ve been searching for new running shoes! Which model did you get?
@KarenAttiah * Prioritize good form over speed
- Tight abs
- Shoulders back
- Back straight
- Head steady
- Hips forward
- Upper and lower arm form an angle 90-135 degrees, sway naturally but don't sway them sideways in front of you
Those are the big ones. Feel free to ask anything :)
3/3
@KarenAttiah No form of fitness for any sport should exclude rest periods. No rest=injury.
@KarenAttiah Thinking more about it i thinj stunt has negative connotation so it's reserved for when there's manipulation or dishonesty involved. But sometimes to describe some wildly innovative way to get a msg across like...idk skydiving naked with it on ur body.
@KarenAttiah My ex used to say, "Running doesn't love you."
@KarenAttiah @JoeyVazquez_ Find a couple of running partners. Some experts suggest over 60% of your runs should feel comfortable (able to talk) so find a partner or two slower than you can run.
Run dates are great for accountability! Setting a deadline to get started helps me.
@KarenAttiah Just.... embrace the hate. Its what I do.
@KarenAttiah Here's a suggestion that helps make it easier : do burpees and pistol squats instead 😐
@KarenAttiah 2/2 and be kind to yourself. You won't love it every day. That's ok. Just put your gear on and go outside. Then you will feel like, "well, I'm out here. May as well." It will get better. 🙂
@KarenAttiah @hoka Never look back!
Run in them, hike in them, backpack in them. First couple of pairs - I had to import from France. Have tossed/donated piles like this since (spouse runs/hikes/backpacks too). https://t.co/H7fnjlND8M

@KarenAttiah I'm just here for the replies because I need to start a running routine but I can't do it for more than 45 seconds if there's not a ball or a predator involved.
@KarenAttiah All jokes aside is there a difference? Idk
@KarenAttiah I took up running at 47, I followed a 1/2 marathon program; 4 days a week and added mileage gradually, so I didn't overdo. Music was key, I ran first thing (5:30) so I had no excuses. I joined am online running community and found that motivating.
Lmao, y’all really forget she has the worst taste in men outside of that Saudi prince toxic and trash has been her type for years https://t.co/VBv5qKDB7A
@KarenAttiah The morality/ethics of the issue entailed by the act. Often the distinction is the hair’s breadth wide except for the importance of the matter at discussion. It all in how it’s framed & so agents need to know why they act in a stunt or while making a statement.
@KarenAttiah @DetroitPrinces4 @hoka If you want to save coin on shoes you can always buy last year's model of any running shoe for a pretty steep discount. I've used Hokas before but right now I am loving Saucony Endorphin Shift V1s (V2 is the current version). V1s are ~$80. V2s are about $140.
@KarenAttiah @ofjoeysaladino I know this isn't advice you're looking for right now, but I was a lifelong runner who had to stop 10 yrs ago because of arthritic knees. Switched to biking outside in warm weather and recumbent bike inside for winter. It's great aerobic activity and non-impact workout for legs.
@KarenAttiah Look, after you’ve gone for a long run, you can totally eat ice cream. You’ve already burned off the calories. That’s how this works, right?
@KarenAttiah Don't run too fast at first, don't worry about how fast the people around you are running.
Give yourself small goals and try to make them just a bit longer every few days.
Run in places that you like and appeal to you. Like do laps in a park instead of running in the city.

a) 6%
b) <2%
c) <0.5%
So many newsrooms pledged to address their own racial disparities last summer. Where do those pledges stand now? Oh, you've hired more POC? But are they entry-level roles or senior/management roles? Let's see the real breakdown of "diversity" numbers.

White people are rarely actively racist at these publications. They simply never bother to challenge the status quo—typically out of concern that they will be inconvenienced or made to feel uncomfortable. And so the status quo often remains entrenched for literally decades.
From 1990-2020, @NewYorker mag published 1 Profile by a Latino writer & 4 Profiles by Black women. Only 0.7% of @NewYorker’s Profiles in the last 30 yrs are by Asian-American writers; 5% are by Black writers. Only 32% have been written by women.

Was the recall necessary? No
But did we learn some valuable lessons about the 2022 and 2024 elections? Also no
Quirky recall gubernatorial elections generally aren’t the most predictive.
But one clear lesson from the California results: not-ready-for-primetime Trumpist Senate R candidates will rally Dem turnout and lose swing voters.
Major Senate stakes in states like OH, PA and GA.
I'm pretty mad at Democrats and willing to vote GOP despite disagreements on core issues like immigration or trade. But I will never, ever vote Republican as long as one of the issues we disagree about is whether it's okay to pretend that Trump actually won the election in 2020.
