The last time I missed the Code Conference (#codecon) it was 2012 and it was called....the D conference. If that's not a sign of a different era...

Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective is distancing itself from Ozy after the company’s impersonation scandal.

A little-known fact about Los Angeles is that every Uber ride, no matter how many miles you travel, is required by city ordinance to be 40 minutes.
@teddyschleifer Looking forward to seeing these $1400 sneakers
On a investment diligence call with @GoldmanSachs, the COO of Ozy Media impersonated a @YouTube exec to sing the praises of the company's CEO and say how successful the company was.
This falls far outside the acceptable startup space-time-truth continuum. https://t.co/MuMIfrfzk7
Ozy once pitched me a story about it having 25 million newsletter subscribers — an astonishing number — but demurred for weeks when asked for evidence.
Eventually, I was told it was “going with another outlet,” but that story never materialized …

I’ve been curious what Powell Jobs would do with the Waverley Street Foundation since she set it up recently as a new institution outside of Emerson Collective.
Thought it might be more of a family foundation. But now we know its focus is on climate work.
Wow, @LaurenePowell Jobs is putting $3.5 billion into a new climate group and will spend that money over the next decade. https://t.co/sOLA3irC0T
@danprimack Possible it was outside of that round. I mentioned it here.
The Atlantic stories about Civis now mention Emerson's investment, FWIW.

Aware the #Jets are nowhere near being good but at least be an entertaining bad team for me, that's all I am looking for these days
At the Beverly Hilton for the Code Conference and worrying that this year @karaswisher has gone TOO far https://t.co/nT2mfnpCiF

Well .. the pain of being a die hard .. is very real .. sports is a nice irrational escape from real life but man … this Jets stuff is painful
@Danielsand I think the larger issue is that they are just not going to win this one via blog post. Show the data or 🤐
The problem with these blog posts is that Facebook is at such a trust deficit it can't just reference "research" it has done and ask people to believe it. It'd go a long way to release the full report (which the co already hid internally from employees).
https://t.co/SjKAikOBJ5
Never trust a quarterback who looks like he just lost 6-2, 6-1 to Serena Williams. https://t.co/U3Hjl8IRNS

Right. Facebook has to learn that there is not trust without transparency. Make the arguments here with full release of the research. https://t.co/MExsydIvpA
#Jets are allowing 22 points per game. Should be good enough to be competitive in today's NFL on a weekly basis. On the other side of the ball, 2 TDs in 3 games is bad enough to make Dowell/Gase blush
Broncos 17, Jets 0. First-half analysis:
* Can't put this on Wilson. No run game, shaky pass pro, stale play calling.
* Killer penalties -- Morstead delay on FG, Echols DPI
* Bad situational fbl by defense.
* Conclusion: Ass kicking. #Jets
Oh well. 2 tds and 6 picks to start the year is what you should focus on https://t.co/fsF5gznf5G
Seinfeld coming to Netflix next week, Ted Sarandos says
I think if you’re the #Jets, you can’t afford having offensive talent just being inactive. The problem is the guys who are active aren’t producing so the optics look terrible and the questions aren’t going to disappear
One win in two weeks — for a team that had been in the wild-card discussion — is mind-boggling.
https://t.co/qcpuu4N9Iy
I’m not expecting them to win a lot of games but I want to see progress. Nothing from today showed that #Jets
I know #Jets are rebuilding. I know the Mike Maccagnan era put them back. I know this is going to take time.
But this is just embarrassing. Two years of being an embarrassment.
The Browns went 0-16. They were 7-8-1 the next year. Then 6-10. Then 11-5.
Where’s the progress?
Satya Nadella on TikTok: "It's the strangest thing I've worked on" #CodeCon
The Jets are going to waste the best building block in sports: the post-Adam Gase bump.
Ref went for the one-handed catch 😂 https://t.co/tG2b6iyghO

Nobody wants to hear that I’m sorry https://t.co/V3VbufRJ9t
When was the last time the #Jets threw a screen pass? Get the kid easy throws early
The Jets have now gone 6 Quarters without scoring a TD. https://t.co/KZIvV310Ud

This would be the perfect week for the 49ers to trade Jimmy G back to the Patriots.
#Jets only one game worse than the Chiefs and ya'll want to panic
Only place McGovern and GVR have been worse than press conferences has been on the field so far
Garbage time drive appropriately includes another Davis drop and a Berrios drop that leads to an INT
It is currently a very poorly designed offense https://t.co/ZKPYJFnEFt
Well, Louie Swisher (@karaswisher's son) just asked a great question to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos asking him how he can protect the rights of content creators like Dave Chappelle. Let Louie ask all the questions. #codecon.
Saleh said the #Jets have had “great weeks of practice.”
The #Jets could use a receiver capable of going up in contested coverage & coming down with the ball. Maybe one who can stretch the field, draw DPIs. Something to create as spark.
Fans don’t want to hear about how well a team practices. Don’t tell me about the labor, show me the baby. #Parcells
Saleh on Wilson: “I don’t want to sugar coat anything, but he had his best week of practice.” #Jets
Rebuilding is hard. Did anybody expect it to be this hard? #Jets
Wilson was rocked on the INT. Why leave him in? They should go with the veteran backup. Oh, wait... #Jets
#Jets final analysis:
* Gase-like offense. No run game, no answers in passing game. Put Wilson in too many bad situations. LaFleur schooled by Fangio/Donatell.
* No discipline. Too many penalties.
* Non-competitive in first half. That's on the coaches. Preparation an issue.
And now Wilson has thrown an INT, his 6th of the year. Becomes the third Jets QB to have six INTs in his first three starts. Others: Geno Smith and Glenn Foley. #Jets
And the Jets burn a timeout in the third quarter. Some things never change. #Jets
#Jets outgained, 198-55.
They've lost 29 yards on 4 sacks. Not a good ratio.
Our research says we’re good. Here, look at something that is not our research:
@FastTash I would've kept Rex and @RealTannenbaum https://t.co/PBLMbBu4cP

@FastTash lol, I have faith in the Jets vs. the Toronto Argonauts. Maybe.
@EvanRobertsWFAN It’s done. They think they’re smarter than the sport. No Mims. Zero production on offense. Can’t get by on Braxton Berrios, Tyler Kroft, and a turnstile O Line.
@RichCimini It’s like Rex Ryan and Gase combined into one
It's only been one preseason game, but I'm very confident that Cal Clutterbuck will win the Hart, Art Ross and Selke Trophies this season.
Pretty brutal and ugly first half but not really Zach’s fault which is the opposite of last week but the same result so yeah
The Islanders and Rangers combined might score more tonight than the Jets do today
The Islanders have already outscored the Jets today for those keeping score at home 🤷🏻♂️
Another ugly first half for the Jets. Their third drive of the game was just an absolute killer. Two huge drops from Carter and Davis and a delay of game penalty to erase points.
Through three games this season, the Jets have just three total first half points.
Through 3 games I think its fair to say that the #Jets defense is a bit better than last years version. The offense is inexplicably worse.
Jets are completely unwatchable. The state of NY football is extremely sad.
I absolutely loved this from Quinnen Williams after the game today. When @JeaneCoakley asked him about his good personal day, he didn’t want to talk about it.
“We can talk about the negative.”
This is accountability and young leadership.
https://t.co/m4a9EusdUO

Jets lose 26-0. Wilson goes 19-35 two interceptions. Leads the league in INTs.
Defense did the best they could with no offensive help but allowed 121 on the ground. And gave up 344 yards total.
Saleh told Wilson to be boring and he's doing a great job of that https://t.co/4UHHEYlueL
Great to see the offensive line made the trip to Denver today 😑 #Jets
I still dont get how Mims cant make this team. The receivers arent exactly good. He must be terrible in practice to not be active.
#Jets have been outscored 46-3 in the first half through the 1st 3 games. Its actually a slight improvement over last year where they were down 59-13 under Gase.
I hate this Party in the USA remix https://t.co/OE9lrACbIH
That's the first turnover forced by the Jets defense since Week 1.
Dear Joe Douglas,
Please go find someone this week who can actually catch the football.
Sincerely,
Me and every @nyjets fan
The Jets have been outscored 46-3 in the first half this season.
Yikes. https://t.co/2HZNPJeDvT

Remember Denzel Mims isn’t good enough to play for the #Jets because they have just too much offensive talent.
Yeah who needs Denzel Mims…the honeymoon is gonna end quick for this coaching staff.

DeSean now has 68 career receptions of 40 yards or more, including two today [75, 40].
And for everyone cackling about how DeSean always gets hurt, keep in mind he’s one of only four players from the 2008 draft that’s even playing anymore.
8 months after making this silly video highlighting the problem, the @NYCCouncil agreed to hear my bill limiting 5 & 6 figure tree restitution fees on today's parks committee agenda, the 2nd step in becoming a law. Figured I'd repost for a good laugh...

We are mourning the senseless loss of 44-year-old Babacar Dia, a victim of traffic violence yesterday in East New York. It doesn't matter if it's from the steel of a speeding bullet or a speeding car, we must — and can — stop this violence on our streets. https://t.co/ZTQlbD6X59

A vote to hike the debt ceiling is a vote to legitimize the debt ceiling.
Every day, crypto people wake up, sneer no coiners, and talk about how pumping their bags is saving the world.
Every day, fiat people wake up and think about legal approaches to avoiding a default on the national debt, with no personal monetary gain.
years ago a recruiter asked me to meet w carlos watson abt ozy. the meeting was fine & he was charming but nothing he said made any sense. he told me ozy was the “uber” of media & when i asked him what that meant given uber is a one to one service co he was genuinely flummoxed. https://t.co/QPSaRgVmsg

@RichardRubinDC @jbarro So it's pure DC inside game, without conveying useful economic information?
@jbarro I'm not talking about MMT. I'm asking you what you think the numbers accomplish in terms of journalists communicating the contents of the bill.
@jbarro Why are spending and deficit levels important? I don't think either are. What matters, IMO, is quality, and quantity. And given the heterogeneity of the economy (where there are shortages, where there aren't etc.) what does a headline number that combines it all accomplish?
Glad to see the growing scrutiny of stablecoins. The riskiest stuff, from a systemic standpoint, always seems to be stuff marketed as stable (eg money markets funds) or popularly perceived to be stable (eg housing). https://t.co/eT1IuEpUiT

@mattyglesias @OsitaNwanevu @Nate_Cohn And I should say, inflammatory in both directions, since its underlying premise — if I’m right about what you think here — is that the American electorate contains a huge amount of anti-black racism that Democrats have to tread carefully around.
@mattyglesias @OsitaNwanevu @Nate_Cohn But since Democrats do need to attract those voters, and the party is already coded as “racially liberal” (to put it politely), directly addressing black concerns over racism ends up alienating the “50-year-old white people” who say are in the driver’s seat of American politics.
@mattyglesias @OsitaNwanevu @Nate_Cohn So this makes me think that the reason people keep saying your point is banal is that you’re not actually stating your point.
As I read you, you’re saying something like “Democrats are undermining themselves by making ‘attitudes about black people’ a salient political concern.”
@BudrykZack i am straining to understand how you can watch the social network as anything other than a scathing indictment of zuck and everything he's built

@anshublog @alex at a super basic level, higher rates move $ out of the market. if people can get 3-5% yield (> inflation) in a bank account, they have little incentive to seek yield in the market. also more expensive to borrow, so less gas in the tank for businesses to invest in growth.

@MikeHanford Gonna think on this one! It’s “more grist for the mill.”

@slhamlet @guybranum It’s always a liberal arts college in New Hampshire. “I went to Belvedere.” “I’m so grateful I got a well rounded education at Benson.” “That’s interesting. At Sanford we were required to take a language - I chose Catalan.”
@swish My joint burned down in a suspicious insurance fire :(
@guybranum Same with me only Santa Cruz and ultimate frisbee :(
If you qualify Pfizer Pfolks, make your boost appointment! I just made mine for Thursday. If you ask they’ll throw in a little super soldier serum free of charge. Normally that’s like fifty bucks!
@MoisheLettvin I don’t typically get visual stuff but when I started getting them once in a while it was wild
@stwaldo Yeah I hear that. A frustratingly common issue. You gotta find a neurologist who’s a headache specialist. Good luck ❤️.
Good morning to all from me, JAZZ DAD https://t.co/0Kcnmlxqq3

@MoisheLettvin One day me and @romanmars will make this podcast.
@stwaldo That said there are LOTS of preventatives, including CGRPs like ubrelvy. If her headaches are f’ing up her life she should try some! If you can’t afford them the companies who make them offer big subsidies.
@MoisheLettvin Wow! In your 40s? Because of a physical thing, an accident or something? (Only because you should get an MRI if you haven’t to make sure it’s not a tumor or something.) And boy do they suck! My mom pretty much stopped getting them post-menopause. My fingers are crossed for me.
@CptBaker jesse "explanation of her doctor's medical advice" thorn to the rescue
As messed up by migraine as my life has been, I think often of how much worse it could have been had my mom not been a migraineur who got it and didn't want me to suffer. And treatments are so much better now! If you are suffering without treatment there are options to help.
@stwaldo Her daughter was having a headache that wasn't responding to her abortives (sumatriptan) and her doctor had prescribed steroids to break the medication cycle. The mom kinda didn't understand why and the pharmacist didn't know about that use of steroids.
@mutoshow It is hard to remember this! Thank you for doing the extra work. When I feel like someone is being malicious, I block. Muting is just a way to save myself from having to figure it out - I don't want to be hostile, just protect myself and my feelings.
“They call this one a hot lick cowboy concept,” either a wrestling fan or a football color commentator said proudly.
No one is more proud of knowing lingo than wrestling fans except possibly for football color commentators.
For every inner city white kid with a disability whose divorced parents were poor but had graduate degrees, who went to fancy private middle school, didn’t graduate and ended up backing into a mid-tier public university, then found creative entrepreneurship: I do this for you. 🙏 https://t.co/4Uoz6dT9Jj

Forgot there was no #jjgo recording tonight, spent a big chunk of the evening writing a bit. Good news, though: it will be just as not-relevant next week! Irrelevant is just another word for evergreen.

Here's a fun fact: when I started watching Al Michaels, around 1990, he was 76 years old, and he remains that age to this day!
People mostly just complain about announcers so I just want to say Al Michaels is SO good at his job. Live forever Al.
I bet David Fincher directed the Gronk jersey insurance movie. He came in at 6AM like “get me a different couch I directed Gone Girl.”
Commercials are so fucking weird they are little movies only they cost more than movies and they are about insurance phone numbers.
@AdamKatzWriter Nah they just gotta be in the ballpark
Premise of the commercial I just watched: Rob Gronkowski tries to save on insurance by calling around from the sofa in his trophy room, which room is decorated with two of his own jersey, framed. He is also wearing his own jersey. On the call, he disguises his name.
In no other endeavor but the NFL chain gang do we expect this level of precision from our senior citizens.
Most amazing thing in football is the chain gang. Not only does it rely on two old guys walking exactly perpendicular to the sideline for like 75 feet, it relies on some other old guy who ran over and just put the football on the ground. And then they’re like: “two inches short!” https://t.co/jKDmPytAOc

@KevinTPorter Really proud of you Kevin. “Ya dun good!”

@JesseThorn @swish (in reality, of course, it was like two children)
@JesseThorn A lot of people who are eligible had to wake up at 6 to call some number at an obscure pharmacy or constantly refresh some terrible state website to find an appointment for their first two shots. It was so weird to just book one online at Walgreens for the next day.
@JesseThorn @guybranum In my experience East Coasters have an odd fixation on
a) Having gone to a good school
b) Recognizing only East Coast schools as being good
