What a difference a regulatory agency makes: Where @US_FDA pushed hard for broad use of #Covid boosters in the US, the European regulator, @EMA_News, says at present there is no urgent need, though it is assessing Moderna's booster application to be ready if they're needed. https://t.co/OpHEmeYkAk
I know that everybody who wants a #Covid booster doesn't care how the decision was made or if it was made badly. They just want dose 3 (or 2, for J&J recipients). But the way this happened was ... not good. @matthewherper explains. https://t.co/C16wMfnHgZ

Without ever putting it into words, I believe I have equated death with brain death. To me, the cardiac death is sort of like Death's waiting room where you flip through an old Golf Digest and wait to see if Death has time for you.
Weird obvious realization today: If you are doing CPR on someone, it means they are dead. "Uh, Quinn?" I know, I know. But death seems like something larger than a state which can be undone by remember a Bee Gees song.

@michaelkruse Uh. You should have stopped by NYC in March/April 2020 if you really think this is the case
@williams_paige @michaelkruse @juliaioffe Roger that.
@williams_paige @michaelkruse @juliaioffe The first few months were a cascading catastrophe—refrigerated trucks outside hospitals, everything closed tight, unending fear, and a president telling us to inject bleach in our veins. This period is a grave disappointment. But kids are back in school, life is *semi* normal
I wrote and drew a thing on grackles for @TexasHighways wondering what, for example, might be inside a grackle. (Also, if there were nursery rhymes featuring grackles.) https://t.co/wfPLNC4tLW https://t.co/QJC6GvprvD
@BGrueskin @williams_paige @michaelkruse @juliaioffe I think our natural defense mechanism makes us forget a little. But nothing now compares to the almost daily FB postings of someone's parents dying, refrigerator trucks and gloomy streets without people.

@emilynussbaum I shall not be live-texting you about this one. You're on your own.
@BGrueskin @michaelkruse @juliaioffe Oh I hear you. I still think about the 7 p.m. hour. But there's something to what they're saying, about this latter phase too.
"More than half of all greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were generated after 1990, meaning that most of the disasters today’s children will experience can be linked to emissions produced during their parents’ lifetimes." https://t.co/TP3g4HPSoK
perhaps related ... https://t.co/Bg0R1aW10K https://t.co/FtK5fWswm4
@BGrueskin @michaelkruse And yet @michaelkruse isn't quite wrong. What @juliaioffe noted feels spot on: 18 mos into the pandemic "so many people I know are still feeling so down (myself included). One friend: the bad things are disproportionately destabilizing, the good things insufficiently fortifying."

Nervous headlines about massive resignations b/c of vaccine mandates do not deliver. Click on the stories. They are often based on “concerns” or union litigation strategies. But there are no real walk out numbers that suggest a crisis. Yet. It’s a gamble, but call their bluff.

You don't say? Fix your headlines, people. There has only been one resignation. The union can say whatever it wants, for reasons that likely have little to do with the vaccine mandate. This is the time that was bound to come: deadlines. Don't blink. Mandates are working. https://t.co/93mtEB0OJf

Alternative take: in the medical facility the focus of this "protest", we learn in the article that already 94% of the system's 12,000 workers are fully vaccinated. @tomricks1 I think we are analyzing these lawsuits against mandates incorrectly. I leave the law to others. To me, they are a sign that the plaintiffs have no desire or expectation to quit. So they sue so they can delay that moment when their bluff is called.

@mbalter @natashaloder I was hoping to hear your thoughts on the military games in wuhan--the "Republican" House report on covid-19 origins concludes that was the global spreading event. (alternatively could also be proof it was not spreading then)
@natashaloder Baric: "In the chimera we made in..2015 with the SARS virus..we had left signature mutations, so it was understood that it was the result of genetic engineering. But, otherwise there is no way to distinguish a natural virus from one made in the laboratory" https://t.co/fI06wjEqFF
@antonioregalado @natashaloder If we knew the truth about those Wuhan lab workers who got sick around November we might know a lot more. But we have only China’s word for it and that is worthless at this point.
@natashaloder @antonioregalado In the U.S. there was huge pressure from the Trump administration and those allied with it not to detected the virus anywhere. You will recall that cruise ship passengers had to stay on board so no one would count them and make the president look bad.
@natashaloder Yes, as a fellow Substack writer I totally agree.
@antonioregalado @mbalter I agree with all that.
@antonioregalado @mbalter It is possible. But so many indeterminate viruses happen at that time of year we really need more to go on. It is an interesting hypothesis. (report also says that $606,382,986.11 i..e 3/4 billion was spent on an air conditioning renovation in September and that isn't accurate)
@mbalter @antonioregalado Unless.... the Italians at the games spent more time in the sort of places you would be likely to pick up circulating virus.
@mbalter @antonioregalado sorry, I realise I screwed up the threading on this conversation but the point is basically if the Wuhan games was superspreader event you would expect early sero cases in proportion to representation in Wuhan by different countries.
@mbalter @antonioregalado Oh, the Italians did send quite a large contingent actually. But the French and the Germans sent far more. Where are all their cases? https://t.co/9bShsSGl4v
@antonioregalado @mbalter If the Wuhan games was a superspreader event, you would expect cases in countries to be proportionate to the numbers of people of different nationalities sent to those games, right? So unless the Italians sent a massive contingent to those games, where are all the US cases?
@antonioregalado @mbalter between northern Italy and Wuhan actually led to more spread? (Third theory, Italians are so bad at science they keep contaminating their samples and all the earlier cases are not real).
@antonioregalado @mbalter Lots of US citizens there but we don't have any serological data suggesting sars-cov-2 had arrived in the US at this time. Why does all the sero evidence point to Europe and not US in the early months? Is it that nobody in the US has looked, or is it that the air travel...
@antonioregalado @mbalter I've not gone back into October--because it is scraps of information rather than a pile of evidence that paints a compelling picture. It is absolutely possible. There are several things that make me cautious though...
ICYMI: If you are interested in the origins of sars-cov-2, do read my piece from a few weeks back. It is a round-up of many important details of what happened in China of November 2019 and has proven a really popular read. https://t.co/Nh6ds5mNMs

isn't even scheduled to arrive in Tucson until sometime tomorrow. But if I wasn't already a ball of rage and anger, trust me when I received this email from @PODS today, this would have pushed me there. I take exception to their claims here. https://t.co/NVHv1lweE7
around 3 delivery dates and sat home waiting for three days. Now I am told and their website shows my pod will be delivered tomorrow. I have absolutely no faith that is going to happen as they failed to email me a delivery window again tonight and my client advocate told me it
and still being told nothing. So again, as of today my pod supposedly left Ft Lauderdale on Sept 9, @PODS failed to deliver it on the first scheduled date of Sept 17, the second scheduled date Sept 22 and the 3rd scheduled delivery date of Sept 25. I have planned my schedule
a call from their operations telling me the pod was going to be here today and the website had been updated to reflect that. She told me she could also see that, but she had information and couldn't tell me what she didn't know. I am just really weary of this nonsense
had an update, my pod was scheduled to arrive at the Tucson location this coming Monday 9/26. I was trying so hard to be pleasant, but I am afraid I failed. She told me she still couldn't tell me where my pod was, it was just in transit. I told her I in her absence I had received
So on Thursday I had been called and told my pod would finally be delivered on Saturday - over a week late. But after I sat home all day on Saturday and there was no pod, I did finally get a call from my assigned client advocate who had not called me since Wend. She told me she
So I haven't added to this thread since Thursday night. I wish it was because @PODS had finally delivered my missing pod, but they haven't. I just had to take a couple of days break because @PODS has turned me into a ball of rage and anger. 😡

@twoforfives Nah. It’s important to put forward your perspective irrespective of whether folks agree. Similar to why short term profit maximization isn’t a good way to run your company long term.
@moonbeamvotes @marklaporta Yes it does. It also says a lot about the qualities necessary to win elections, which (sadly) have nothing to do with governing.
@KJohn0906 Yes. I scrutinized Trump much more quickly, to be honest.

Achilles heel for creators isn't monetization, it's discovery. Always has been. Obscurity is far greater threat to writers, musicians, filmmakers than things like making $ or piracy. Solving for that legitimately helps creatives. Once they have attention all the other doors open.
Art is a passion not profession until we get to next stage of capitalism/automation. Then creatives may finally be valued (will be the only thing left we can't automate). I'm here for this world! https://t.co/BQTHWft5MK

I've made music for 20 years in free time. It's not my profession. I've never made a cent from it and haven't tried. Not everything we do must have commercial intent or even necessarily be valued by others. In fact, having one (or multiple!) passion projects should be embraced.

@notdred @AaronRichterman I think his point isn't that: "otherwise they'd go to waste" is a thing of our own doing, not some teleological outcome. (I don't even begrudge anyone wanting a booster). But we'd otherwise waste them is our choice, not a "let's booster" argument.
@cyrusshahpar46 It would be good to find out how many “first doses” in the last couple months were actually unreported or miscoded third doses. My guess is that it’s a sizable number.
@olgakhazan I think a lot of women are well aware of fertility declining as they age. To change when many women choose to have kids there would need to be big changes made to ensure this didn't decimate their career goals and also make childcare more affordable.
@SarahKarlin Note that the alleged violation happened before the issuance of a BLA (“full approval”) for the Pfizer vaccine. After the full approval, it might still violate the provider agreements to vaccinate off label, but would no longer be provision of an unauthorized biologic.

this is my two cents from reading about a lot of the struggles working moms faced pumping milk in online groups circa 2019, 2020.
the bottom line is that this seems like helpful improvements for nursing people but will still mean its a lot easier for wealtheir people in more office-like jobs to breastfeed than it will be for lower-income people.
depending on the physical requirements of your job even these pumps may not make pumping on the job realistic.
you must get paid to pump if you pump while working....there are a few types of breast pumps that are designed to be worn discreetly (KIND OF :) ) under clothes that allow for hands free pumping...they are EXPENSIVE and likley require out of pocket spending even with insurance.
If you are pumping on a break that would normally not be paid, you will lose income. Many nursing moms may need to pump 3-4 times a day for as much as 30 minutes during an average work day. that could = a lot of lost income.
I just got Biden's SAP on the PUMP Act which I had not heard of and seems designed to make it easier for more people to have right to pump breast milk at work...except there seems to be a big problem for hourly employees....

DOJ: Griffith pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to violate IEEPA, which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison.
DOJ: In April 2019, Griffith traveled to the DPRK to attend and present at the “Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference”. Despite the fact that the U.S. Department of State had denied Griffith permission to travel to the DPRK, Griffith delivered presentations.
DOJ: Griffith, a cryptocurrency expert, knew that the DPRK could use these services to evade and avoid U.S. sanctions, and to fund its nuclear weapons program and other illicit activities.
DOJ says an American citizen helped the North Koreans learn about cryptocurrency and how to use blockchain to evade US sanctions. DOJ says Virgil Griffith, 38, a resident of Singapore + US citizen, began making plans as early as 2018 to provide services to individuals in DPRK.

@jbarro I'm not talking about MMT. I'm asking you what you think the numbers accomplish in terms of journalists communicating the contents of the bill.
@jbarro Why are spending and deficit levels important? I don't think either are. What matters, IMO, is quality, and quantity. And given the heterogeneity of the economy (where there are shortages, where there aren't etc.) what does a headline number that combines it all accomplish?

A vote to hike the debt ceiling is a vote to legitimize the debt ceiling.
Everyone has tweeted it already, but the latest @benyt piece on Ozy lives up to the hype, so I'm going to tweet it as well https://t.co/w20zjSNbuV
Every day, crypto people wake up, sneer no coiners, and talk about how pumping their bags is saving the world. Every day, fiat people wake up and think about legal approaches to avoiding a default on the national debt, with no personal monetary gain.
Once again, the monetary community on here that gets the most mockery is the fiat community. Constant bashing of the Fed, the dollar, inflation etc. And instead of self congratulation, sneering, and smarminess, fiat adherents are working to diffuse the debt ceiling crisis. https://t.co/vNu0OIQOLA
Glad to see the growing scrutiny of stablecoins. The riskiest stuff, from a systemic standpoint, always seems to be stuff marketed as stable (eg money markets funds) or popularly perceived to be stable (eg housing). https://t.co/eT1IuEpUiT

There’s a VW Passat with Missouri plates that’s been parked in a bus stop in my neighborhood for like a week or longer, and it has some note on the windshield begging NYPD not to ticket because it’s broken down and “getting fixed.” They’ve given it like ten tickets so far.

Idly observing "huh, so Dwight Howard is on The Masked Singer this year" and I look up to see that the Cenobites are in my living room. Obviously it's disappointing given that I will be flayed exquisitely but in retrospect if anything's going to open the portal it'd be that.
