@dominique6138 @davidrlurie There are many ways an effort to persuade someone to get the vax can end.
Assertion of religious freedom or commitment to a superstition or hatred of science or liberals or Joe Biden all do the trick, at least when I’m attempting to persuade.
@dominique6138 @davidrlurie Does any recognizable religion with status as a religion prohibit the taking of vaccines? Early on, Christian Science—traditional skeptical of medical intervention—promoted the vaccine for its followers.
@davidrlurie Yes—and Chabad!

@page88 @MaxBoot We also say we are unworthy successors to The Greatest Generation, whose greatness consisted of… making sacrifices for the common good.
@page88 This narrative in so much of the media that the country is “divided” over vaccines clearly needs to stop. Thank you for the reminder, Virginia.
@MaxBoot (Nearly a quarter of all Canadians live in Quebec.)
@MaxBoot Yes, that’s it exactly. But can US common-law and worship of civil liberties accommodate those things? My skepticism now runs deep. And given all that, the 73% >18 is even more impressive
Oh and only 10% of young Americans can find Afghanistan on a map. Where the US was at war for TWENTY…well, you know the rest.
@MaxBoot That’s a decent comparison — another common-law country (with the major exception of Quebec).
Of course there’s also universal healthcare there.
@freezed00 At the very least everyone should #GOTV where v stands for both vaccine and vote
@ben42m Came from the USA. Which also brought us Big Tobacco and Big Oil and the attendant thrill of disinformation
By contrast less than 66% of eligible voters - those >18 - voted in the last presidential election. Which was record turnout.
Once again as the Ned Flanders of vaccine proselytizing I urge everyone to hand-sell it to laggards. It’s still surprising how many people don’t know it’s free, don’t know “which one to get,” are scared of needles, etc.
Am I a bigger optimist than Max? It’s nearly 73% of those over 18, and those under 12 still aren’t eligible. Unlike the Grp of Seven, we are also home to the Bill of Rights & can’t just introduce statutes by fiat. Also home to all social media but TikTok so it’s disinfo central. https://t.co/tMZ0OPEf9w
And ignore the unpersuadable and the exciting videos meant to make you hate them.
Keep persuading people, keep getting people appointments, keep giving people lifts to CVS.

@page88 Our healthcare system is so full of surprise bills, I'm not surprised people don't realize it's free. You have to jump through hoops to get reimbursed for the cost of C19 tests. Shockingly and wrongly, some places do charge for tests.
@page88 Every time an American gets vaccinated, an angel gives Donald Trump the middle finger.
All of that being said, the @NewYorker’s website has, over the past 5 years, published a comparably impressive array of diverse bylines, easily eclipsing the print mag in terms of representation and inclusivity.

The problem with recalls in the current partisan world: It's easy for determined minority to get a recall on the ballot. They have big incentive because if majority is complacent, as Ds were earlier this summer, they might win. It's a tool to undermine majority rule.

California was once a Republican stronghold, yet the share of voters here who are registered Republican is now 24 percent. Newsom's victory hammered that home.

California is far less Republican than it was in 2003. Registered Republicans now make up 24% of the state, compared to 35% eighteen years ago. Meanwhile, the % of voters registered as Democrats has increased.

The polls close at 8 pm today in the recall election of Gavin Newsom.
Because Democrats are more likely to vote by mail, it's likely we'll initially see Newsom with a wide lead that slowly narrows as the night goes on.

Let’s talk about racism! Most white people at prestigious magazines don’t ever want to talk about race or diversity at all. Why? It's primarily because they’ve been allowed to exist in a world where their mastheads resemble member registries at Southern country clubs circa 1950..
@AmyKinLA Move it to the other side of Alta Vista Blvd?
Why is this important? Because otherwise friendly, decent white people are really the bedrock upon which passive racism maintains its grip on media mastheads & editorial departments. And when ppl look up to you as an example for an entire industry, this shit is just embarrassing

One question heading into tonight for the California recall is how low Caitlyn Jenner's campaign finishes.
Jenner was at 1% in latest LAT poll.
When I worked at NYT, I had access to a plug-in that told me what percentage of readers dropped out of an article, and at what point they stopped reading, and my advice to most of you is that your articles are too long.
Many voters still to be counted, but Caitlyn Jenner has 55,797 votes so far in the recall statewide in California, putting her in 13th place.
For perspective, Andrew Yang had 115,130 first ballot votes — in the much smaller race for New York City mayor.

Thank you to @LAReviewofBooks, where I wrote my only piece on classical music ever. A music professor friend encouraged me to write more at one point, since I care so much about it. I haven't. I couldn't quite articulate the reason why, but that New Yorker stat says it all.
The classical music industry wants our money — women and POCs to buy albums and tickets — but what The New Yorker stat shows (30 years, not a single review by a woman!) is that it doesn't want any of us to mediate it, because our opinions about Bach don't matter.
I ❤️ classical music. I hear the industry wringing its hands, wondering how to get more diverse audiences into venues. When one of the top publications goes 30 years without letting a single woman do a review, guess what it perpetuates the stereotype it's old white man music. https://t.co/cWX7JUsvF7

Lord knows the system could improve, but, as best as I can tell, it's how you can put together a "visual stories" team that's ready to attack the storylines that matter to your audience.
5️⃣ No piece, except in rare circumstances, is conceived for print before digital. Every digital piece is considered for big print play, but not until after the digital work is published.
4️⃣ In each case, all products are digital pieces anchored by visual elements substantial enough to stand alone. In most cases, graphics staff conceive, report and design the majority of the piece. This requires more than one staffer. In some cases, reporters from other desks.
3️⃣ Reporters are challenged to pitch ideas at the targets. Through a mix of greenlighted pitches and handed down assignments, a coverage plan is put together.
2️⃣ Editors set goals for each topic, including some key targets for coverage. These can include explaining underlying concepts, tracking newsy data stream, engaging audiences with interactivity.
1️⃣ With guidance from their masthead and audience metrics, graphics editors use their news judgement to define a small set of key storylines to pursue. The topics can be on any beat and across all desks.
This string of coverage is our team pursuing what I see as the new school approach for graphics departments in the digital era.

Funny story. A decade ago, after an article on a gambling ring, I got a death threat. My editor convinced me to call the police. The cops told me to figure out who sent the threat, contact them, meet with them and then encourage them to go to the precinct. I, uh, didn't do it.

White people are rarely actively racist at these publications. They simply never bother to challenge the status quo—typically out of concern that they will be inconvenienced or made to feel uncomfortable. And so the status quo often remains entrenched for literally decades.

So let’s go ahead & delve into some of the diversity stats (all public) for @NewYorker mag...
Amid all the huffing and puffing about the #ObligationVaccinale that went into effect today for healthcare workers, consider these stats from Marseille hospitals:
Since the new law was adopted in early August, the rate of vaccination rose from 60% to 93%.
So, it's working.
For example, does anyone know how many of the 40,000+ feature & critics pieces that the @NewYorker (the print mag) has published in its 96-year existence have ever been edited by a Black editor? I’ll make this an easy one—multiple choice:
a) 6%
b) <2%
c) <0.5%

I think a lot about the Norm MacDonald line “I think clever people think poor people are stupid.”
I mean, that was *supposed* to be Kevin Faulconer. But the former mayor of San Diego could barely attract Republicans compared to Larry Elder, a conservative talk radio host. Says a lot about the state of the California GOP (and perhaps something about the national party base). https://t.co/XbIttNoCd7
For the record, he has not endorsed in his own state, which has an open senate seat!!! https://t.co/g4HBRsvQTh
Breaking: there are a lot more Democrats than Republicans in California.
Fortunately for Republicans, they don’t need to win any Biden +29 states/districts to win back Congress in 2022.
I can't overstate the need to put these off-year races in context. If Newsom survives by 25% (?) and McAuliffe were to win by 5%, they'd be spun as big Dem wins.
But that same ~5 pt swing right from the 2020 Biden/Trump margin would easily win Rs the House & Senate in 2022.

For those not familiar @SenatorMenendez has history with Blinken & his wing of Dem diplomacy.
Blinken was deputy secretary in Obama 2nd term & Menendez opposed State’s 2 biggest initiatives then: Iran nuke deal & Cuba opening.
So Menendez isn’t a home team chair for Blinken.
