The Met Gala started as a charitable endeavor. It evolved into something ostentatious and over the top, which it has been for many years. A major event for celebrities and NYC elites? Absolutely. But it is not a stellar example of giving back.
I wrote about the debut of Raider football with fans in Las Vegas, which was bonkers.
And then I wrote about the game that took place in Darth Vader’s Roomba, which was bonkerser. And also definitely not a word.

Here's the deal about this much hyped Saturday's "Justice for January 6" rally.

It took a petition signed by 12% of California voters in the last election to initiate the recall. The recall cost the state $278 million. The race was effectively decided within 15 minutes of polls closing. https://t.co/PgFWfKnqJX
The problem with recalls in the current partisan world: It's easy for determined minority to get a recall on the ballot. They have big incentive because if majority is complacent, as Ds were earlier this summer, they might win. It's a tool to undermine majority rule.

The USD bonds are the biggest clear exposure to the rest of the world, and they've been treated like the trash they are for a long time, it's not like there's somewhere in the western financial system treating Chinese RE debt as if it's safe.
The thing I hate about reshuffles is journalists tweeting “so and so might be going X, or maybe to Y, or maybe they’ll stay in place”:
Lads, we’ll know in a few hours.

My memory of the history of Clubhouse is that there was basically one thread on here, can't remember by who, which noted you'd need an extraordinary volume of constant content production because nothing was preserved. @ewpaisley @karlbykarlsmith Great relatively superficial example of that https://t.co/JES2R2c97F
@INArteCarloDoss I wouldn't have replied but for the rude post, I presumed you might have some genuine correction to what I said - but you know nationwide inventory is relatively low and it's the contract liabilities that are the issue, so it's fine.
@karlbykarlsmith It sounds like that's sort of part of it, it's been handed over between different developers and there's been some deterioation. But I think the main problem is that it's been stalled for the best part of a decade and nobody wants it now.
@INArteCarloDoss The capital misallocation is the problem, not the inventory. 9.3tn sqm in contracted sales in H1, relative to 2.3tn sqm in national inventories. How much inventory does Evergrande report?
@MayankSeksaria V good roundup here (not from me!) https://t.co/CaQb9TQDOr
@SadlyTemporary Sunac was as recently as EOY, no? Evergrande I think actually snuck under on gearing in its last results.
I suppose the strongest version of the argument is that if they *really* meant it, why would the regulators let Evergrande just keep making heavily discounted pre-sales all year, just compounding the madness and leaving a bigger mess to clean up? Which is a fair question.
It wasn't a case of 'we're gonna crack down on property and we really mean it this time!' headlines - there were specific 'you can issue debt if you hit these targets and can't otherwise' rules, and these guys were waaaaaaaay over the 'absolutely not' side of the targets
This is a really good point, and is an illustration that for all the hot air about getting vaccinations done, there is an astounding lack of international coordination which could unlock a huge number of doses. https://t.co/8TbeUJEOZj

@bencasselman You should include the caveat composition effects remain a large issue. A lot of low-wage workers still haven't gotten back their jobs so that artificially elevates average wages because they are no longer counted. So the real story a bit worse than depicted here.

Similar story with owner's equivalent rent, though the year-over-year pace is a bit faster there (+2.5%). https://t.co/O0EcZy27it

A huge question for inflation going forward is what happens to shelter, which accounts for nearly a third of CPI. Rent remains muted year-over-year (+2.1%), but is edging up month-over-month (+0.3%, a 3.3% annual rate). https://t.co/05LIGYzPI0

Again, it's helpful to look at levels, not just changes. Rental car prices still well above prepandemic levels despite latest declines. While airfares haven't gotten back to prepandemic levels and now are falling again. https://t.co/iSyqajGzRU

We're seeing clear price slowdowns, or outright price declines, in other pandemic-related categories that saw big runups in the spring/summer.
Airfares -9.1% in August. Hotels -3.3%. Rental cars -8.5%. https://t.co/z5iCD0QLO5

It's helpful to look at actual wage levels. For all nonsupervisory workers, real earnings are a bit above where they would have been if pre-pandemic earnings/inflation trends had continued. Leisure and hospitality earnings are well above trend even after adjusting for inflation. https://t.co/p5N6k55ufg

Inflation is eating into wage gains: Average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers are down year-over-year after adjusting for inflation. But real wages were up vs July. And wage gains for leisure and hospitality are still easily outpacing inflation. https://t.co/EpyOuo5MG3

Restaurant prices rose a bit more slowly in August but were still up 0.4%, and are up 4.7% from a year ago. Possible sign that higher wages/food costs are leading to price increases. https://t.co/LCS3jcR89j

There was lots of talk this spring about the role of "base effects" in year-over-year inflation. That issue is fading, but it hasn't disappeared. If inflation had continued on its pre-Covid path, prices would be up 4.9% year-over-year, vs 5.3% in the actual data. https://t.co/MrSapb36TS

Despite the slowdown in inflation in August, prices are still running well above their pre-Covid trend. https://t.co/UCqc54FrVh

Overall consumer prices are up 5.5% since the pandemic began. Without the runup in used cars, prices would be up just 4.5%. https://t.co/2rVurqcQCv

Used car prices were a huge driver of inflation this spring/summer, but they fell 1.5% in August. Still up 31.9% from a year earlier. https://t.co/wCCmqXpzM2

On a year-over-year basis, inflation (both headline and core) slowed only slightly in August. But over a shorter time horizon, there was a much sharper slowdown. https://t.co/xImJWYcZxc

Consumer prices rose 0.3% in August, down from 0.5% in July (and 0.9% in June). Prices were up 5.3% from a year earlier.
