Feeling all sorts of feelings introducing Kernel to the world! Kernel has truly been a collective labour of love, and I'm honoured to steward this work alongside so many other wonderful people. A thread on what magazine is about & how it came to be🌿https://t.co/yDtFIhETPi
@castor_wheels When it comes to contributing to intellectual life: Silence has much to recommend it.
@TylerAlterman @devonzuegel @chaosprime @visakanv @sonyasupposedly @0x49fa98 My stuff is pure shitposting
Great discussion here on elites with @wolftivy and @miltonwrites https://t.co/Oeb5WwDFmv
Can someone tell this guy that his capitalist bosses at the Independent set up a paywall to make the infinite scarce and sell it back to us?
Next, can someone tell him that web3 may be his best path to independence *from* those capitalist bosses, as it enriches content creators? https://t.co/d3cJiqEUWW
"This is fine" incarnate, the complacency theorist is unmatched as a champion of the establishment. The official explanation is always true: the WMDs are in Iraq, the virus is under control, the Afghans can handle it. And if it's not, well, who coulda known?
Pretty awesome! First Senatorial candidate proposing that the US government buy a strategic reserve of Bitcoin. https://t.co/CGW48ZJN43
You don't own your Twitter account. You don't own your followers. You don't own the network you've built on these platforms. And yet you don't understand the problem web3 solves. https://t.co/O2N1CcnsX9
We aren't introducing digital scarcity here. Access to your social media account is already scarce: you have it and Twitter has it.
We are introducing digital property rights. Now only you have the private keys, and Twitter doesn't.
Many years ago a friend of mine wrote a series of memos [1] for Microsoft on the importance of open source. A minority view that eventually became the majority after Satya.
Today, looks like a similar memo wouldn't get written at all. Their loss!

"Technical Advisor to the CEO at Microsoft", is that like Assistant *to* the Regional Manager?
Microsoft was actually early on supporting Ethereum development environments on Azure, btw.

@udiWertheimer @kevinsekniqi I know you did hfsp [1] but actually don't know who coined ngmi [2]. I'd of course cite it in Markdown format.

Fully centralized is mandatory custody. They can take it.
Fully decentralized is mandatory self-custody. You can lose it.
So a semi-centralized model where you can *transfer your assets* between custodians may be where most land up. Still a step forward from fully centralized!
Yeah, uhm, I don't know how to say this politely but: Guys I'm here for sharing my work, do y'all actually like this site?
Why do twitter personalities talk so much about their private life? I assume people care mostly about ideas and am still surprised when they start asking for more in public forums.
@gamespotting Sometimes it comes out of a crippling lack of self-awareness. When you submerge the iceberg of personal desires, you might end up running the ship of reason into it quite often.
@gnomicperfect Common ones: Personal grudges, popularity contests, ideological axes to grind, political fights, and office politics jockeying
What I very much dislike about current 'rational' discourse is that all real motivations for engaging in it are concealed and laundered. This is both dishonest and bad epistemology. I condemn it!
@Annaleen I imagine things like this a lot. How do we build things that people thousands of years from now will feel like we cared for them?
@SophieSandor Whatever it is that @SamoBurja is up to, and similar folks. I have a longish and not very public list of these people, as they're worth keeping an eye on; there are tens of thousands of them online, and they seem to have the cool ideas five years pre-mainstream
Almost all of my friends who are devs have doubled or tripled their income over the last couple years. The only way for that to happen is to move to a new job. https://t.co/9F69khX11W
@eigenrobot @oscredwin @orthonormalist "If everyone would just" but they don't realize that everyone will not just
@eigenrobot @oscredwin @orthonormalist wtf this is bonkers
CITY:
* You become depersonalized object to others
* Pricey, endless status games
* Another human always 30ft away or less when pooping
* Eat bugs
VILLAGE:
* Say good morning to people on your walk
* Build things outside in spare time
* Closest pooper is a bear
* Bugs eat you
This whole "sit on Slack and don't do more than five hours of real work a week" thing isn't actually gonna be economically viable for quite some time
The number of people I know who do this give me the impression that we're gonna see some major layoffs in the coming years
@vgr tweet the md5 hash of the prediction. easiest option i know of
The optimal amount of freeloading in a society is nonzero, but ultimately you need to have baseline productive output to (literally) keep lights on and shelves stocked
We are flirting very aggressively with that baseline https://t.co/TPv1owYHyf
FWIW this does not apply at all to the behaviorally German among us who do 25 hours of actual efficient work then go home and chill
You can't start new companies in that mode but you can definitely be a productive member of a team
@mikeleinart @JCorvinusVR This isn't an issue that's solvable with a technical surveillance fix, it's only gonna get better if engineering management gets better, which it likely won't until the next big recession
We're not gonna get to Jupiter if y'all keep phoning it in like this, postscarcity ain't here yet, effort is still required
If your job isn't worth your effort, get a better job
@JCorvinusVR I know people who have gotten retention raises despite being drunk nearly every waking hour since lockdowns started
Eventually somebody's gonna go thru and flag it, just a matter of time (and economic collapse lol)
This sort of shit is completely unsustainable *unless* you're at a FAANG and hooked up to an unlimited amount of statebacked capital that's being directed at you so you don't ever even consider leaving to do something more meaningful than ad targeting https://t.co/IaR4G7ZypZ
The "my job after the revolution will be solidarity therapist" crowd likes to frame discussions around work generally as evil managers vs good workers but the real conflict here is between those of us who understand it's important to pull your own weight and those of us who don't
A bunch of people are reading this as an argument for 80 hour weeks or apologia for abusive employers, which says, uh, more than is intended https://t.co/UPPfpmGfZt
oh you eat boneless wings? do you want a bib as well?
In Milan this weekend, a massive protest against vaccine mandates. https://t.co/07SzvsiP6r

Things have taken a turn. I’m apparently becoming an early morning sea swimmer https://t.co/Atu8VOojTb https://t.co/crXaPu9Qk5

There's a lot of these boomer software guys who've achieved guru status without actually doing a whole lot who want to pull the ladder up after themselves and pontificate authoritatively from their stylos.
It feels more like nerd persecution complex to me. A vestigial hindbrain reaction that is no longer valid to lash out at the "jocks".
Perhaps I don't get close enough to Silicon Valley.
I'm not sure this is a real thing.
I've seen a helluva lot of really nasty vitriol about "brogrammers" but I've never encountered any in the wild. https://t.co/u1I2dIXK1G
Bollards working as intended. https://t.co/UDb21SlOid
@mattparlmer Ecoterrorism and animal rights terrorism were much more common in the 70s. I wonder if rising climate anxiety will prompt a return to that.
The German defence, economy, agriculture & cabinet ministers have all lost their seats. Tonight is turning into a bloodbath for the CDU #btw2021
That we need to point out to a major publication that "antibombing norms" are a universal social good is... https://t.co/FgScbUHRr7 https://t.co/NMrNCX0Zv3

RT @ohgoditsranor: This is actually like. A genuine problem lol.
There's significant technological illiteracy in younger students because…
@EricRichards22 Brogrammers are real but they're mostly a megacorp phenomenon
Basically just passable upper midwit dudes from target schools who would be IB analysts 15 years ago
They generally matriculate into middle management very quickly and write little code
@bennuides Exactly, these antibombing norms are hardwon and we'd be stupid to discard them
RT @hradzka: We must once again tap the sign that reads, “you do not want this norm to decay, you stupid sons of bitches, *you have offices…
@mattparlmer All the anti-terrorism experts worried about their career prospects, now that we're transitioning to great power competition, be like: https://t.co/sPMKtX0zsv

Bingo. Extrinsically motivated jocks that would have ended up on Wall Street had they graduated a few decades earlier https://t.co/pJc5D5O5Nr
lmao my parents weren't wealthy
none of the homeschoo kids I knew were from wealthy families either https://t.co/vKeSahkFHf
it's official:
My first book - part memoir, part "red state relocation guide" - is forthcoming spring 2022 via Bombadier Books/Post Hill Press.
It'll be about New York City, Texas, what it's like to live in a house & drive a car, raising your kids w/"culture," "roots", etc.
“there is no alpha left by the time there is a playbook” is also true in science

@Doc_BadVibes @eigenrobot @oscredwin @orthonormalist I know a few former leverage members and I don't think this is true!
WELL THEN WHY WOULD YOU SHOW THEM TO ME https://t.co/wIDT1CjK33

@oscredwin @orthonormalist i just wish people would come up with something more original to do with their time than "try to take over the world" https://t.co/Bv7GMGrzn4

@eigenrobot QTs are often better to see branching discussions
@eigenrobot I regularly look at just QTs of discourse
@eigenrobot You see our product is embedded in their product, which is a different org, so we have to get telemetry out of their telemetry.
@eigenrobot I do not have perms to run the pipelines.
@eigenrobot Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. They were like 'look at this $600 steak'.
This would not be a problem except that when someone notices it will be a catastrophe.
cc @eigenrobot
I regret to inform you that I went to go check why the dashboard I owned before paternity leave wasn't working and (unrelated) found out the pipelines they set up for me before paternity leave haven't been run in months and no one has noticed.
@eigenrobot @telmudic Signal has shit the bed so I'll wait for it to reconnect.
@eigenrobot @telmudic I have someone for you to talk to actually. World class pytorch guy.
@eigenrobot @PurpleWhale12 @oscredwin Which EY has literally written about (he has also made fun of the 'just be good' thing)
@ndwpdx Start with a circle.
Now draw the rest of the fucking ethical system!
"Simply do the good thing and stop doing the bad thing" is both:
* Hilariously stupid
* Correct
But you can justify a lot with it https://t.co/FNbGJcVfUt
Is a brogrammer someone who participates in male status hierarchies instead of imposed hrarchies?
magic has nothing to do with violating the laws of physics. it has much to do with violating *expectations*, and we can reflect on what in our society causes us to conflate the two
it's been said before but the way "bro" has morphed into a slur for "men I dislike" is very weird https://t.co/sYG92m29Pz
@Nexuist @eigenrobot Ok, but “home appendectomy” is legit
@eigenrobot I chose the perfect time to wake up
lesgoooooo
new york city is 4(?) hours away and I have never been https://t.co/fAXRQqMfZ1
all i did was ask “where the hoes at??” and now i am no longer invited to the intellectual dark web dinners
to make sense of this I think we have to start by recognising that the US is ~5 countries in a trenchcoat https://t.co/5GGkdLFAjk
@visakanv yes let's please. need a little time on my side to get settled too.
@eigenrobot @_epictweetus_ @shriyanevatia https://t.co/xmFNP8pWAe
@eigenrobot @_epictweetus_ @shriyanevatia I tried to warn everyone https://t.co/2MHARhcCOY
Absolutely incredible day on twitter. Thank you @visakanv for the signal boost! If I missed your request, reply to this with anything that's bothering you from a neuromusculoskeletal perspective, and I will try to help.
twitter gets better with log scale of your followers & don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

@nickcammarata @RomeoStevens76 i definitely feel like i stole it from someone, probably @eigenrobot ?
apparently black twitter and indian twitter have gone to war
@Spatcholula my initial impulse was like
shouldnt you be better at defeating people in psychic combat if thats literally your job
raze the cities. allow the endless Steppe to return. let tengri reward you https://t.co/VSH2Cusdpm
book of modern prayer that just adds "gm" to the beginning of each one
gm this week will test my abilities in many ways gonna do the absolute best that i can to be thankful of the blessings i have received and conquer the difficulties that i face and not worry about things i cannot control
@everytstudies And “being autistic” means that you have noticed this :)
@zeldajunkielol2 @eigenrobot god i cannit wait 4 automation
@zeldajunkielol2 @eigenrobot ☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
it's basically the default attitude taken towards kids
@skandabhuti @_bottlejack @eigenrobot the memes tho https://t.co/d8kigEo8KG
in medieval lore satan usually advocates for himself and does a pretty good job -- he's always right and well-spoken, it's just that he's constantly overruled and crushed because while his args are good his intent is bad lol https://t.co/NTZuvmcjYb
this is now a topic that has come up enough i want to ask here -
how important is intellectual and conversational compatibility to falling in love? is it your primary draw?
@RomeoStevens76 @QiaochuYuan's act of genius I believe
He’s the ONLY one who shouldn’t be allowed to https://t.co/fgiHNAkt8R

@eigenrobot Blacks and Indians both confirmed enemies of my dad
https://t.co/CgQDq8rmW4
@eigenrobot I should've done the original tweet with wider margins on the meme so that it doesn't crop the text, but alas.

If I have memed danker it is by standing on the shoulders of Eigens
https://t.co/09AYAUU83z
because it's never just that Mary is who she is, it's never strictly her relationship with Jesus or her role in salvation -- she always argues her position, often even arguing for her *right* to argue in the court of heaven at all, and bests Satan, the (very male) Accuser
all kinds of cultures make certain exceptions for certain women when it comes to general views of feminine capacities (or lack thereof), but it still thrills me a little to think of medieval women religious reading these stories and contemplating this model of women's *reason*
great example of seemingly dumb dark ages people having enough sense to see their way to something we're way too deep into political philosophy at this point to grasp with any kind of reliability
oftentimes he'll argue in court to claim a soul he's owed via diabolical contract or even all the souls of humanity because everyone's touched by sin etc and he's not ever falsely accusing anyone it just concludes with Jesus saying, like, "shut up idiot" and humanity triumphs
sometimes in this particular genre (the processus sathanae, a little research interest of mine) the Virgin Mary even gets to tell Satan off, serving as the defense attorney for humankind! he'll often throw out something about her being a mere woman, and she'll get a moment like: https://t.co/suZLwmPNzM

This is an Astra Militarum fan account. https://t.co/xVMQmEBI5o

@selentelechia @eigenrobot @oscredwin @orthonormalist tfw the stably malevolent buy ballot printers
@eigenrobot @orthonormalist haha, I was gonna say, sev 2 my team...but now I know which team it is, and it ain't mine 😈
@eigenrobot If you eat enough sheets do you think your poop will be gold?
@telmudic @eigenrobot @shriyanevatia It made my mouth drop open. I have never seen such things in text, or my little ears have never heard such things said before.
I'm clutching my pearls
i havent liked star wars since i was sixteen and im mad about this
guess a man just accumulates insoluble grudges as he ages
this one seems more harmless than many
@eigenrobot I believe this was one side of the exchange. I leave the wisdom of posting the other side to the reader. https://t.co/AGK7NXWqxF
@orthonormalist [draws circle on whiteboard]
yes assume a circular ethical system
wait
I remember one time I said something about how annoying and stupid it is that every online recipe has a lengthy story preceding it and a bunch of women got really mad at me on this app.
If your story was that compelling you wouldn't need to hide valuable information after it.
The army bought a new truck from GM based on the chevy colorado, and even though it has the exact same engine it has ~25% more torque because they turned off all the emissions control stuff in the ECU.
See what they took from you?
@orthonormalist @eigenrobot @PurpleWhale12 Turns out he wrote a lot of good stuff
@selentelechia @eigenrobot @orthonormalist "Do charting until everyone with just..."
@selentelechia @eigenrobot @orthonormalist When I first saw this, it was printed out and hung on the door at Leverage. The type was too small for human eyes. The only way to read it was with a magnifying glass.
@petergodofsky @eigenrobot @AlexGodofsky @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia RETVRN https://t.co/WTtC7R06zv

@petergodofsky @AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia I miss web 1.0.
@petergodofsky @AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia goddamnit.
@AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia Like i could respect if it were like the song lyric thing, sure fine. That's just inane.
@AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia oh that's way dumber
@AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia oh, to stop the recipe from showing up in the results summary, so you have to click?
@AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot *tasteful* use of <marquee>
@AlexGodofsky @eigenrobot heck yes
And then for the holidays they'd put in some script to make it snow on the homepage

@eigenrobot I doubt it's in the book. I do know that men have suppressed disgust responses when sexually aroused. But that doesn't explain this.
@eigenrobot Do women have more purity/disgust response on Haidt's moral foudnations than men?
> It shows an utter disdain and ignorance of the education, training, and continued professional development needed to obtain and retain a teaching license. No other profession is looked at that way. “Sure I can homedentist my kid” or “I can home appendectomy”

@eigenrobot society used this construct for thousands of years? its definitely useless!
@eigenrobot If you think that's wild, you should see Indian castes going at it on Twitter.
@R1Jack @petergodofsky @eigenrobot @AlexGodofsky @LiteralSheridan @selentelechia I mean I could totally believe that housing prices are bonkers even in contra costa, anything's possible in the bay area, but I always figured the commute across the mountains was hellacious enough to dissuade people

what does seem under commented on is that the QTs are becoming their own separate twitter space. no one is reading the replies, only the QTs. and people are commenting using QTs. novel use of the platform, wonder if it sticks
locking this because skimmed recent qts and looks like the boring white racists are using burner fake indian accounts to make their own and man i guess that was incredibly predictable in retrospect

i dont think its crazy, there are stranger forms of money around the world
prisoners used to use packs of cigarettes, now cans of mackerel are used
the curious case of Yap stones
china joins their ranks with giant empty apartments as a store of value if not money per se
in this light you dont see them as malinvestment, you see them as a means of getting around . . . what exactly? i guess a second consideration is that deposits get shit interest for varying reasons so yeah use real estate as a store of value, you can expect a good return
about to read this but elsewhere saw a claim that in CN real estate is typically used as collateral for loans
and i wonder if in this light you can view giant ghost cities as primarily a store of value in china
which makes them make quite a lot more sense https://t.co/tFFW5RWoZf
@HarrierMagnus reading now but one thing that I saw elsewhere was a claim that real estate is frequently used as collateral for loans and i wonder if one can view the massive construction boom as . . . actually just gonna write this separately

@selentelechia My sister did homeschooling for a year. Most of the other home schoolers she ended up meeting were just weirdly religious.
@eigenrobot Society created everything
But who created society?
@FunkyDuffy @eigenrobot I knew a grad student from pakistan, quickly learned that pakistan HATES india and vice versa. At every mention called them subhuman. Whole nations make it their identity to hate other nations it seems.
@__frye @eigenrobot Very nice. Is that common in the US, though? I never met anyone who was homeschooled
@bungoman @goblinodds @RohanLUno @eigenrobot https://t.co/Pm5iL2pEqa
@eigenrobot The internet was never freer than it was then.
It was also extremely male dominated and far nerdier than it is today.
@__i960 @eigenrobot Blindian Kamala Harris will be their savior, just as soon as she gets up off her knees, laughing.
@selentelechia There were a couple of homeschool families in our area that were better off, one guy was a dentist and the other was the DA, but I wouldn't describe anyone as wealthy. Especially not people raising 5-7 kids on one income. We were ok b/c my dad was in the Air Force, but not rich.
@Pandurevich @eigenrobot google says 3-4% of kids in the us
probably depends on location
@NewtypeApologia @eigenrobot Also, it could be said that if teaching licenses and stuff prepare you for anything unique, it's for teaching classrooms full of children with diverse learning styles/needs. @__frye @eigenrobot Anecdotal as well, but my boss homeschooled both of her kids. They both finished college at 20. And the stats are just the stats. These ppl omygodyoucantjust'ing over homeschooling are something else.

What’s normal has nothing to do with what you should be ashamed of. It’s extremely okay to be sexually weird. It’s perfectly fine to fall outside the averages when it comes to anything around sex. All adult, consensual sex is inherently morally neutral regardless of popularity https://t.co/3g5eCVzuqn
It says so much about how sex-negative we are as a society that two of the richest, most powerful people in the world spent years afraid to admit to being consensually non-monogamous https://t.co/ZTVPbTDU9p

@ByrneHobart In all seriousness, I would *love* to see them do a TWILIGHT ZONE-esque half-hour anthology series based on Dahl’s adult stories. “Man From the South” would go over great as an episode.

By the way a lot of the growth in dollar terms will come not from growth rates but simply appreciation of the RMB
I agree it is very unlikely to ever overtake the US in per capita terms, but that will be irrelevant (it might stabilise around twice total US GDP, which is a massive, massive gap)

@ByrneHobart @John_Hempton The policy is against illegal use of electricity by minters and clearly states that virtual currency mining will pay a higher price. Not wholly illegal nor seized by state. Thus ~30% of hashrate is still in China but trending down. Machine translation of policy below: https://t.co/ZAGh5XvPqh

@ByrneHobart Hi Byrne - May I present https://t.co/K1LEKmReHy
@patio11 I think Dahl was smart to write so much children's literature, where his love of violence and dark humor just looked quirky. He really likes killing.
Dahl's estate will provide some nice, high-class dramas for the grown-ups, but Netflix will have to be very careful that kids who are looking for The BFG don't end up watching a show about a woman who bludgeons her husband with a leg of lamb and then feeds it to the police.
The Dahl/Netflix story reminds me of that time in 5th grade or so when a teacher realized I was bored and gave me a random Roald Dahl book to read. It was not a children's book! Most memorable story was this one: https://t.co/CqED5dTRlV but there was plenty of murder, too.
If it takes almost a year to apply a policy, and you apply the policy that made sense a year ago, you’ll do ok as long as it’s not a response to some kind of rapidly changing situation, perhaps involving exponential growth.

You *can* have a commons that's shared through complicated social norms, but I don't think a group of several billion strangers can create a coherent set of norms in a single generation, especially with language/cultural gaps.
It's an unstable equilibrium to have something valuable but un-owned. Right now the equilibrium is that these assets are subtly privatized by big companies, but that's not the only model, and not necessarily the most efficient one. https://t.co/zJC7rSKdUA
@ruima @John_Hempton Thank you! This is very helpful.
Prime Day in February 2022, you heard it here first. https://t.co/oTOjvu6eaj
@John_Hempton Looking at the hashrate, possibilities are some combination of:
1. Some miners are still operating in China (legally? Under state control?)
2. They moved equipment
3. Rest of world installed enough to reduce China's share, also making 51% attack less likely.
@John_Hempton I think they moved a lot of it. Hashrate dropped after the May ban but started coming up again: https://t.co/59OA75N2n3 And there's this https://t.co/WuB8VCTcOv
@DoodCapital Yes, but that’s true of other assets, too—if you’re an early employee at a company that goes public, the way you ultimately monetize is by converting your stock to fiat.

have some stuff going on in your life that you care about that has nothing to do with Internet points. play the guitar, learn to cook. It’s nice to have at least one thing that’s just for you that you refuse to turn into content
if you get triggered, feel attacked, defensive, want to fight back, etc, it’s generally best to just log out for a day or three, or a week. Most people who say shit just wanna say shit in the moment but don’t really care about you and will forget about you soon enough
generally speaking, the more touchy, difficult, triggering etc the thought might be, the more I advise that you be really circuitous about it. be long-winded, take many tweets, be verbose, be tedious, illegible. you want to bore the people who are itching for a fight
avoid affectations of authority. remember, Twitter does not have tone of voice or facial/body language, so people will read your tweets in *their* voice
it helps to introduce the textual equivalents of ums and ahs,,, be deliberately sloppy,, even mispelling sometiems https://t.co/GGRXf4rKeE

This is my main reason for being skeptical about the Netflix adaptation. Animation allowed Bebop to be recursive and referential. The anime is light on exposition, but it creates a universe of feeling through music, action, and gorgeous images. Can live-action do that?
Is Julia really a character? No. She's a woman of mystery, a hard-boiled dame, an archetype. We don't learn anything about her or her relationship with Spike, but by the end of the show, you end up caring deeply about her. You want her and Spike to make it.
I'll also argue that Bebop's intricate storyline exists in the aesthetics. That's why they're so important. I rewatched the anime recently and realized there isn't much actually there. So much of the backstory between Spike, Vicious, and Julia is left up to the viewer.

@SamurSciCop "We use this particular internal representation because it simplifies coordinate arithmetic" ???? I don't see how that would justify the risk of errors by thousands or even millions of users. Whatever benefit on the database end is defeated 100 times over on the users' end.
Does anyone know why nucleotide coordinates in base zero exist? I am genuinely curious because they are such a pain to deal with, there must be some very good reason?

actually this is the second time i've done the spinach thing and i'm beginning to think i've hit on something brilliant; bet it would work w buttermilk too
