The Met Gala started as a charitable endeavor. It evolved into something ostentatious and over the top, which it has been for many years. A major event for celebrities and NYC elites? Absolutely. But it is not a stellar example of giving back.

Let’s talk about racism! Most white people at prestigious magazines don’t ever want to talk about race or diversity at all. Why? It's primarily because they’ve been allowed to exist in a world where their mastheads resemble member registries at Southern country clubs circa 1950..

For example, does anyone know how many of the 40,000+ feature & critics pieces that the @NewYorker (the print mag) has published in its 96-year existence have ever been edited by a Black editor? I’ll make this an easy one—multiple choice:  a) 6% b) <2% c) <0.5%

The essence of the Met Gala is that ultra-rich people pay huge sums to meet and be photographed with celebrities ... and then deduct their night out from their taxes. Why has no one pointed out that Alexandria Ocasio Cortez wore a "tax the rich" dress *to a tax shelter*?
In its 96-year existence, @NewYorker print mag has never published a Critic at Large by a Black or Asian female writer. From 1990-2020, the mag published only 2 CAL reviews by a Latino writer, 1% by Asian writers, 1% by Indian writers & 8% by Black writers. Only 23% by women.

Now, let’s get back to work.
I’m sure I’m naive here somehow, but in the below anecdote, I don’t understand…why McConnell didn’t just call Biden? Or why he didn’t at least call Coons? The 4 man game of telephone—among politicians who’ve known one another for more than a collective century—feels gratuitous. https://t.co/C5ZQoale38

"Newsome" is trending, and that is not how Gavin Newsom's name is spelled, so adjust your recall projections accordingly.

I'm not disagreeing that boosters may well be indicated for the elderly and the immunocompromised. J&J needs a booster. But, let's not lie to ourselves. SUPPLY IS LIMITED. A third dose here is a first dose denied to someone else. Whatever we choose, that is just plain reality.

It's appealing to believe there is a non-zero sum solution to the global vaccine supply crisis—magical supply increase via waiving patents etc. There is not. Not blaming individuals. Not saying boosters wouldn't help (though clearly some more than others). But reality is reality.
It feels like some people convinced some bureaucrats to give them money for buggy apps. Ask parents to "attest", say, weekly they will not send their kid to school if they test positive etc. Anyone who would, would lie on the app anyway. Waste of staff and student time and money.

Quayle probably also suffers from being over of the last of the total afterthought VPs. Everyone after him had a more prominent administration role, which makes Quayle’s time as VP look even sillier than it did in 1992.
Dan Quayle’s below-average performance on the national stage and as VP overshadows his much more solid tenure in Congress, where he was a reasonably productive and impressive politician. Not surprised he was an institutionalist and voice of reason with Pence in January.

@LPDonovan @GS_Watson Congressional Democrats have an amazing capacity to disregard completely the reality of corporate base broadening in the TCJA. In their alternative dimension there was only a rate cut.
Gomez railing against permanent corp rate reduction in TCJA versus temporary individual cuts. Fair enough as a policy matter, but the reason the corp rate came down so much and endured is because they gave up a ton in base broadening and that offset the cost in the out years.

If the Biden plans are fully paid for, this in theory won't add to that 10-year number. But it would lead to bigger deficits in the beginning of that window, before their proposed tax increases fully kick in. Per reconciliation, they can't add >$1.75T to deficits through 2031.
Not to sound like a broken record on this, but under current law (without any new major spending programs) the U.S. is on track to run $12 trillion in cumulative deficits over the next 10 years, per CBO.
The benefit of a suspension is that there's certainty around when Congress has to deal with this again. As the government runs bigger deficits, the Treasury hits that ceiling a lot faster.
@LPDonovan @samstein "We're not friends anymore!" is fifth grade playground stuff. Calling him a 🐈 is an alpha move, or something.
The same data also underscores that wealth of the bottom 50% has increased 85% over that time period and that the wealth of bottom 20% of earners has increased 75%. So no, it doesn't suggest the tax change will be positive for wealth creation. https://t.co/qvo9BMfFlh https://t.co/2jIaCKo59h

Among the myriad of legacies left by the 2001 tax cuts, the least remarked upon is the normalization of temporary tax policy in the service of politics. For crying out loud, it had a biz investment break that ended in Q3 2004, just in time to juice GDP ahead of election. https://t.co/KB3I6Df5Ol

@LPDonovan @justkarl but what if I’m tweeting about her cousin’s friend’s balls 😕
@JayCostTWS @JonahDispatch My sense is that many Americans who don’t like (or think they don’t like) partisan politics blame the two major parties. When in fact their diminished strength over the years is one reason why politics has become more partisan.

@LPDonovan This is the correct view on both fronts. I am already on record saying debt limit should be abolished (https://t.co/BCC6CryAmx) but to assume McConnell is bluffing here is to misread the situation. And I think I speak with some credibility on this one.
@sahilkapur Thr $3.5T upper limit is not absolute. Far from it. If W&M could find $10T of offsets they could spend $9.99T (meeting the $1B deficit reduction requirement) and the total spending would be well north of $3.5T. The $3.5T is a goal borne of a press release.

@JonPKay In the graphic i believe all standalone (gaps reflecting instances where it was tied to something else.) but the general game is always the same, and was on display w/ O's experience in the senate and in the WH.
@JonPKay I'm not making a "both sides" point here, just noting observable reality. https://t.co/3A1aeeaKvF
@JonPKay Yes, that has indeed long been the case. That they didn't use that leverage on Rs to make reforms seems like an obvious botch.
@JonPKay Seems pretty clear they screwed up in that regard!
Anyway, the debt limit is at best meaningless, at worst catastrophic, and they should get rid of it. In the meantime it's a hyper-charged version of what has long been true--the President's party bites the bullet & the opposition party makes it painful politically or policy-wise.
@KateDavidson I think this is the truly frustrating part for Ds--intellectually the answer is no but there's a revealed preference for yes (or at least a fear thereof)
@fdwilkinson That's the key question, and McConnell is basically saying eff around and find out https://t.co/yOsN79JrbB
@jonathanchait Yeah, I was just framing up a retort I hear around this--basically, who cares? (Obviously Dems are behaving as if they think people do.)
@jonathanchait If you don't think anybody cares why not dare them to demagogue? It cannot be both.
This frame gets to the nub of it--Dems understand that for at least some of their members (enough to eclipse their paper thin margins), a unilateral, multi-trillion dollar debt limit vote causes real heartburn, with potential downstream effects on their reconciliation appetite.
@StephenKonig Absolutely--in for a penny, in for a quadrillion. But again, goes back to underlying fact that (some) dems are genuinely nervous here.
RT @KateDavidson: Good thread on how to think about the dynamics around debt limit increase. Particularly important Q: If Dems have to pic…
@byelin I mean politically. If the conceit is that this isn't a big deal, nobody cares about the debt limit, and Dems wouldn't be harmed by owning the unilateral lift, they can do it!
@daveraad @lachlan Throwaway joke, but this assumes punditry is the reason for his weakness and the voters are just super thirsty for good old fashioned legislative leadership.
@ppavnr Ok, so if you assume it's not what are we even talking about? Just do it.
@ksusys Pretty sure they're not gonna do that would be a bold choice!
@ksusys Depends how dems play this innit
@forsocialdemmks Allowing procedurally--ie voting for cloture (or giving consent). No better way to phrase it.
@ksusys Pretty straightforward. Do it yourself.
So that's your endgame. Dems finding a number ($6T? $10T? $100T) that kicks things out far enough that they don't have to deal with it again anytime soon. Rs get to run on that number agains every Dem. Only question is whether they do it via reconciliation or not.
One thing we can absolutely rule out I think is Rs allowing a suspension to proceed. Even if they were to allow Dems to raise on their own, they'd have to put a number on it that accounts for all their spending (and spending ambitions.) And/but if they do that they don't need Rs!
@lachlan What this tweet pre-supposes is--maybe they don't?
@ceburnacct I think Rs would welcome that!!
@JonPKay Technically they can do whatever they want whenever they want. Could easily get it done by X date, presumably mid/late October. Just a matter of political will/principle.
Part of the challenge of parsing this standoff is the various rhetorical and procedural layers. MM is right that Ds can raise the debt limit unilaterally, but they don't want to raise it, they want to suspend it. And Dem bet/hope is that R pledge not to vote for it=/= filibuster.
@ceburnacct The byrd issue would be whether they can *suspend* the debt limit. Raising the debt limit is one of the explicit uses of the budget reconciliation process.
@lonestarag05 At best it's meaningless, at worst it's catastrophic
@ceburnacct Of course they *could*--whether they can is just a matter of political will.
RT @rokumar1918: @LPDonovan This is the correct view on both fronts. I am already on record saying debt limit should be abolished (https:/…
@MattGrossmann He's saying no R votes, period. On reconciliation, I guess we have to define reasonable--they can amend the resolution in short order although IIRC that would trigger another vote a rama. Then take up the debt limit raise w/o a cloture issue.
@Tastywaves77 Trying to make them pick their poison. Any/all are uncomfortable options. Least complicated seems to be just doing it themselves.
The debt limit mechanism has long since lost any utility, but until it's gone I think it's worth taking McConnell at his word (and that of the 46 Rs who signed a letter to the same effect.) Appeals to consistency/decency/precedent are useless so long as Ds can do it themselves.

@Dyllan88 @geoffreyvs Just seems like a big mobius strip to me.
@adamhresnick It's never entirely clear who on the house side gets the joke. Some mix of leverage games, delusion, or genuine commitment to blowing this thing up if it isn't to their liking.
@adamhresnick Likely if only because the alternative is total failure which I don't think is an option. I put the over/under around 2T at the moment. Anything below that works out pretty well for Rs. Think Dems could get up to $2.5T; more likely sub-2 than any higher.
@Dyllan88 @geoffreyvs It's the same tension as ever. The base wants what it wants and if you don't serve that market (whether out of principle or political calculation) somebody else will. R voters don't want staid pols now, that want they exact opposite, for better or worse.
@thorsson_john More tangible than usual when it comes to tax hikes!
@geoffreyvs The old lose-the-primary-to-win-the-general problem
Important points buried in good mini-thread. Given the balancing act here, politically and fiscally, the juice has to be worth the squeeze--you don't pick fights over principle and a few zeroes. And relatedly, it's much easier to turn dials than make big structural changes. https://t.co/tgDn8CHMNq
@AndrewPaulJoyce Not sure I follow what you have in mind here. Taxwriters have to find -$1B within the window and anything in the out years has to be paid for in perpetuity or it's not Byrd compliant.
@charliellsworth I use spending here to mean the things that fall under the jurisdiction of the authorizing committees. That is capped at finite levels, $1.75T in aggregate--the only way around this is if they come up with cuts in their own programs. All other "spending" would be via tax cmtes.

@citizenwillis Toiling the in the senate wasn't what got him to the show except insofar as O saw a useful contrast/compliment
Fascinating trajectory contrast between Quayle & Biden. Both elected to the Senate super young (33/29) both up and comers on the national stage, but Quayle was plucked for the ticket the cycle of Biden's flop. Chewed up and spit out well before O gave Joe a new lease on life.

@ceburnacct About the only way you could see them saving face, because I don't think the house would have the votes for anything before then.
@yeselson I think people are willing to buck interests if it's a done deal but not if the other side (or one member from the other side) is going to hang them out to dry https://t.co/03lPJ5iiUH
@ppavnr Again, I'm talking about the broader effect beyond this particularly slice of the bill
I don't think this is by any means existential, but so much of this plan at this stage (such as is it is) depends on people generally staying in line and taking cues from leadership that this stuff has broader effects than the score or one title. https://t.co/tvdF4823Ct

@AlexParkerDC @sahilkapur Just need to find a toke $1B offset, but yeah. Figures here: https://t.co/Lqj77tSP1C
@AlexParkerDC @sahilkapur Technically only what they do. Authorizing committee spending could be put in deficit if not for political constraints.
Too many signs to tap at this point https://t.co/Ex9yZg3XLU
@sahilkapur Ok, but there is no upper limit on said tax expenditures so it's still not a useful frame. They could do $5T if they want so long as they offset it.
Ratios are such that Dems could muscle this through but when the Senate almost assuredly won't follow suit, people start to wonder what the point is. https://t.co/LIEyOtoFc4
Remember: $3.5T is entirely notional and exists only as a Dem communications conceit.
@LuxPacis @katedietzenb You had to hear the metaphor for it to land, but it's all I could hear
But you see, the puppy was a dog. And the industry my friends? That was a revolution.
@johnkartch Yeah, and he finally gave Rice an acknowledgement that his theoretical pass through would take a big hit under this plan, but the most striking part was when he made Ferguson really pry it oit of him on the EV labor bonus

@LPDonovan If that is a problem for them they should’ve insisted on debt ceiling repeal when they voted with Republicans to raise the debt ceiling under Trump. They foolishly decided to not demand its repeal when they actually had leverage over Republicans.
@LPDonovan @ppavnr The issue is some moderate Democrats believe it’s a big political liability. They’re terrified of someone running an ad against them saying they blew up the national debt.

I’m all for criticizing politicians but maybe be less disingenuous when you do it. Also, wearing a “tax the rich” dress at a charity event that the rich will probably write off on their taxes is a brilliant call out. And it showcases the Black female designer who made the dress https://t.co/rV2ZA0TwXK
