“People born in 2020 will have to face between two and seven times more extreme climate-related events over their lifetimes than people born in 1960” New study in @ScienceMagazine by @WimThiery and team shows the legacy we’re leaving the next generation https://t.co/CrUjkhiaHR
Do you work in a climate/environment/sustainability organisation? Could you offer internships to masters students as part of our @kclgeography Environmental Internship module (i.e. unpaid)? Students would work with you 60-100 hours, Jan – Jun 2022. Online or London. Please share
@wang_seaver @vijramachandran Yep. Turns out we need to proverbially both walk and chew gum at the same time when it comes to decarbonization. https://t.co/Xd4tFkD83w
Grateful today as ever for @seifert_steph, who has patiently taught me more about how viruses work in the last year than I was cumulatively willing to learn in the first couple decades of my life (oops)
What caused the 100 biggest outbreaks of zoonotic disease? This new study by @UGAEcology scientists is a really nice reference for (1) how hard attribution actually is, and (2) how closing one window (e.g., bushmeat) doesn't seal the house. 🔓👇 https://t.co/Ohc5OzIakD https://t.co/5l2KAuLv14
Like I say over and over again, there's really only one all-purpose solution to stop zoonotic disease outbreaks: build strong health systems https://t.co/QRqFXqO0WK
New study shows the inequity between children and adults in carrying the burden of climate extremes. We lay bare the fundamental injustice of climate change across generations, as well as the responsibilities of today's adults in power. (1/n) https://t.co/g7ZqxqSp3A
Timing is everything in life. https://t.co/hCRDQhmfdW
This really is amazing. We so rarely see frequent lightning in the core of hurricanes. When we do it usually means a storm is about to strengthen but in the case of #Sam it was already a powerhouse, and not undergoing any rapid changes. https://t.co/3PEt2EclMF
@COweatherman Nice! You named it? Very cool.
Look closely, you can see the gravity waves radiating out from the center. They have nothing to do with gravity. The are produced by forced upward motion from convection which then is forced back down by a stable layer. The energy moves outward and dampens. https://t.co/CihZAxcdSd
@LoGiCtHiNk @judah47 @joecioffi You are correct. This was posted days ago when the models were showing a much different set up

Why? Because the "objections" were always, entirely, professionally, and verrrry cleverly couched in scientific terms. They focused their lasers on the science and like cats we followed their pointer and their lead.
What's your best analogy or metaphor to explain how misleading it is to argue that those who advocate for climate action must be entirely carbon-free themselves first?
@caitoz I'm a climate scientist, and I agree. In fact that's why I finally decided to write this. It's got 1 chapter on climate science; 4 chapters on climate solutions; and 13 chapters on the psychology of change & the key role of individuals in making it happen. https://t.co/N0oLSSD7l1

@ClimateHuman Oh, they definitely are. I am just looking for the best short, pithy, (bonus points for humorous) response **if there are others listening** so those others can see how ridiculous such claims are.
Surprisingly, there may be some truth to what I think he's saying, although maybe not as intended. It certainly seems possible that the threat of climate change could lead to us doing things that challenge our values. The solution would seem to be to act more urgently now. https://t.co/A3AhiWrfoO
To compensate for amplifying this, I should also promote this response to Peterson's narrative. https://t.co/X5eGEdCeqS

People are upset about this, and should be. It's a huge. criminal dereliction of duty on the part of our so-called leaders in government. BUT. It's also not a surprise. Real negotiations happen before the COP, not during it. https://t.co/YjujEVrsHu
Re #COP26 and lack of action & expected outcomes. Don't wait for the COP (ever): meet with your national negotiating team. Find out who they are, what their positions and pressures are. Make them accountable to your movements. https://t.co/GhvF326AeJ
Create a personal relationship with them and their organisation so they feel the pressure of scrutiny and accountability. Presence and protesting at COPs is good, sure, and encourages media scrutiny. But pressuring your govt negotiators and shifting their position is even better.
If you want to have an impact, now and in the future? Find out who YOUR national negotiators are. Insist on meeting with them, demand to discuss their plans, present your own.

At some point in the next 15 years, some mix of factors—including climate disasters and political mobilization—will likely prompt a WW2 style emergency mobilization of resources to accelerate the abolition of carbon pollution. It won’t be this year. But the sooner the better.
One approach to climate politics is to focus on that moment and plan for it. Organize to make it happen sooner. Develop policy blueprints to be adopted on short notice. Research historical analogies. Talk to green capital in advance of a new coalition.

Something that worries me a lot about Biden's climate plans: will they bring enough benefits to working class, BIPOC tenants? Mass electrification won't be cheap. If suburban homeowners get the most help, and tenants the least... the political ramifications would be terrible.

We're never going to get anywhere with attitudes like that in the original RT. Violence against women and girls barely registers with far too many men, and men like Kelly, Epstein, Weinstein, Savile etc will carry on while other men think of the Kelly conviction as showbiz fluff.
Let me fix that for you: second item was about a violent man who preyed on young Black women for years who also was a musician. It's not a piece of showbiz fluff news. It's a landmark conviction. The German election, by contrast, is not yet resolved. https://t.co/eAk5VNY65S

China's northeast power grid was 'on the verge of collapsing'❗️ so grid company enforced emergency cuts for residentials to stabilize grid, affecting lifts, traffic lights, even water supply. If peak load >70GW + thermal outages/low wind, then it is TIGHT https://t.co/aetuaU04g7

🥶China’s northeast grid was really not far from collapsing on 23 September. Its frequency dropped to below 49.8 Hz, thus grid operator had to carry out emergency load shedding, cutting 1 GW power between 16:30-21:30pm in the 3 provinces. https://t.co/DsxeqgQ4Ss

At the same time as northeast grid was experiencing supply shortage, it was STILL sending 5 GW to Shandong and North grid. This could be due to long-term contracts, but I think it also shows northern China and Shandong are facing tight supply too. https://t.co/nOkhA67pNc
@tejasseth I must admit this is hard to project. Coal price is still on the rise and supply remains tight.

@laurimyllyvirta Yes, the capacity above is for 3 NE provinces, so excl. east Inner Mongolia. July's 70.58 GW peak load: https://t.co/P1Vu13bbTT But to my understanding, east Inner Mongolia grid operates parallelly, only administratively managed by State Grid Northeast.

A comeback may be at hand for the youth climate movement with their 2021 Fridays For Future climate strike. Their activism was dampened during the pandemic, but youth activists are now working to rebuild their movement’s momentum. https://t.co/DZ58wPWJsV
These greenhouse gases are up to 14,600 times more powerful at warming the climate than carbon dioxide. The United States has finally decided to start phasing down their use and the climate impacts could be enormous. https://t.co/yecArc6dgg
The EPA last week issued a landmark climate rule that will phase down the use of potent greenhouse gases known as hydrofluorocarbons that are commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning. The rule could bring about major climate benefits. https://t.co/yecArc6dgg
Hurricanes are known for the damage they cause, but they also unleash pollution through oil and chemical spills or through vented or flared gases. Some experts say that doesn’t have to be an accepted reality. https://t.co/qHJUTCfEaG
The wave of mass Fridays for Future demonstrations in 2019 set a precedent for climate protests. Rebounding from the pandemic with a 2021 protest, youth activists are emphasizing the importance of mass events in spurring political change. https://t.co/DZ58wPF84l

The United States will officially begin to phase down use of the potent greenhouse gases known as hydrofluorocarbons. The announcement comes ahead of the COP26 climate talks, and could help encourage other countries to follow suit. https://t.co/yecArc6dgg
Wildfires are not uncommon in the pine forests of Greece's Evia Island, but this year, during the country’s worst heat wave in 30 years, they swelled to massive proportions. Now residents face a long road to recovery. https://t.co/2ostwq88Tm
The nation’s energy infrastructure is not built to stand up to the increasingly destructive hurricanes that are hitting the Gulf Coast. Hurricane Ida was only the latest test, and the pollution it caused will likely remain unknown to the public. https://t.co/qHJUTBY2M6
While the Fridays For Future model of mass climate marches was a key factor in moving the political and social needle in Europe, it never became as widespread in the United States. Youth activists hope to change that. https://t.co/DZ58wPF84l

Environmental and civil rights activists are urging for immediate action to protect communities in North Carolina against what they call environmental injustices caused by pollution from nearby hog farms. A new farm bill could lessen their input. https://t.co/hc0k1HiLpF
Exacerbated by climate change, Hurricane Ida unleashed air and water pollution as it churned over one of the nation’s largest fossil fuel hubs. That’s especially concerning for the Black, Brown and Indigenous communities living nearby. https://t.co/HeCC0VvCGb
The Biden administration’s ban on oil and gas drilling on federal lands and waters was supposed to be temporary, just long enough to implement reforms. But a judge’s order forcing lease sales to continue complicates that plan. https://t.co/TnSo2LWNSI
The Democrats’ $3.5 trillion budget package could cut carbon emissions by 1 billion tons, a new report says. Included in the legislation is a clean electricity standard and financial incentives meant to make electric vehicles more mainstream. https://t.co/8fZr08KDlc

yep! “reform not defund” elides the fact that police departments are largely outside of lower-case democratic control, and “reform” rests on a two-way assumption of legitimacy. can’t reform anything that doesn’t view the reformer as legitimate to begin with. https://t.co/EOrPcUqvj8

Another factor may be how Mongolia was highly successful early on in preventing COVID-19 from entering the country. Since most cases have been due to recent spread more than a year into the global pandemic, patients have perhaps benefited from learning and improvement in care. https://t.co/aWVjzMZYlg
Mongolia is now weathering Delta. But Mongolia's vaccine rate is actually on par with the US. One hopes many recent cases are mild cases in the vaccinated or less at-risk, and perhaps the reported data (~1200 deaths out of 295k cases to date in a pop of 3.2 mil) support this. https://t.co/0WVZV5Kxvn

Yes, that’s what I meant. And despite of climate policies not contributing to the power shortage, the black out will have a negative impact on climate politics. https://t.co/ZRLLA3dWb5
If anything, the power shortage demonstrates the importance of moving away from coal, that a fuel that has been code word for energy security is not secure at all. China also needs to embrace power sector reforms to help the system absorb price fluctuations & maintain stability.
No, it’s very clear that a shortage at this scale could only be caused by a systematic factor. In this case, high coal price. The fact environmental policies are even contemplated proves how smart the industrial spin is in seeking every opportunity to push back enviro policies https://t.co/rLiOInMIv5
This power shortage will carry huge econ & political implications. But let’s set the record straight, the root cause is high coal price, NOT climate policies. You only prove the spin of the heavy industries effective if you believe the latter is the reason https://t.co/a63dg5Nt9g
@LiShuo_GP Perhaps there's a few provinces that could realistically claim they are curbing consumption ONLY because of 双控... ...but I think most in the industry will tell you the ridiculously high coal price causing generators refusing to run their plants at a loss is the primary reason.
@ZJLA @earlatt 哪些省有限制煤炭产量的政策?据我了解,只有山东,原因是产销平衡而不是能耗双控。有其他的吗?最近几个月,产量受到煤矿安全管理的影响,也不是双控政策下的措施。
@dale_wen @EricHolthaus It's amazing to think about all the innovation and investment that would ensue if we could agree on a credible global fossil fuel ban by 2030 or 2035. I have zero doubt that whatever technical obstacles still exist would be resolved. Obviously not overnight.
@YanQinyq Mengdong had a total of 18 GW coal-fired capacity in 2019, more certainly added since then.
@earlatt 产量限制跟能源消费双控有什么关呢?
@YanQinyq Still, the peak load is whole grid全网, and therefore also includes the demand from eastern Inner Mongolia, right? Also, peak load is likely to be lower in Sep than in July esp. as high peak in July is being attributed to high temperatures. Also, the peak is the same as in 2019!
While energy consumption control targets likely play a role in some provinces, it seems likely to me that their role is being exaggerated to attack the NDRC (as a proxy for the politburo) for the policy.
Power rationing across China. This table makes it clear this is mainly NOT about energy consumption control targets. Also not at all about lack of generating capacity. Above all b/c of high coal prices & regulated electricity prices making it unprofitable for coal plants to run. https://t.co/dMjc1m7zBU
@YanQinyq Northeast grid includes eastern Inner Mongolia! Are you comparing the capacity in the three northeast provinces to the peak load of the entire Northeast grid here?
@magnusgustu What irks me is you don't have people attacking companies piloting deep, low-grade geothermal or heat storage or any other potentially promising option saying they are a diversion from the "real" solution. Heat is local, the more options on the table the better.
@magnusgustu For example, it seems to me that the materials technology advances needed for industrial heat pumps are much more fundamental than the steps needed to commercialize these things. Direct electricity or synthetic fuels harder to make cost competitive.
@magnusgustu Of course. We don't really have off-the-shelf solutions yet for all industrial heat or powering all district heating networks on N hemisphere w/o fossil fuels or excessive use of biomass, or do we? Electricity/heat storage on the scale needed to do that w wind&solar isn't trivial
